The main duties of the Nurse Manager, Surgery ASU/PACU/Pre-Op are as follows: Works independently in ASU/PACU/Pre-Op Clinic to ensure smooth flow and coordination of all Operating Room Cases pre and post op. Manager provides input to Surgical Service higher management to keep them informed of any issues or concerns or process changes. Supervises Surgery ASU/PACU/Pre-Op Clinic Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Technicians and Nursing Assistant/Transporter. Coordinates, manages and schedules daily staff assignments Completes labor mapping for productivity under the Decision Support System (DSS) Manages and completes annual staff competencies and proficiencies timely Manages employee actions in coordination with Human Resources Management Service Manages time/ leave for direct reports and utilizes Accustaf for tracking T/L and running reports Facilitates monthly staff meetings with direct reports Participates in weekly Surgical Service meetings to include: Supervisory meetings, Anesthesia meeting and individual meeting with ACNS. Participates in monthly Surgical Service staff meetings providing input into the agenda Serves on several medical center committees and sends staff to appropriate hospital workgroups and committees. Manager will ensure information is communicated to appropriate personnel in Surgery department Performs and oversees audits for ASU/PACU /Pre-op Charting. Is the contact person for Chart audit questions related to Narcotics SCIP measures. Completes or assists in completing one-time reports as requested by Surgical Service or higher management Oversees Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) for Surgery Clinics including competency assessments Provides input for annual Surgical Service Business Plan and equipment needs Responsible for oversight of Equipment Inventory Listing (EIL) for Surgery areas of responsibility Responsible for oversight of Environment of Care issues for areas of Provides input to Surgery vacancy requests as well as serving as Subject Matter Expert and completing interviews Completes daily "huddles" with Surgery staff Creates and reviews Surgical Service SOPs and MCMs as needed Provides oversight and input of Surgery issues or concerns to Chief of Surgery, Associate Chief Nurse for Surgical Service, Administrative Officer, Nurse Managers and hospital management Serves as a resource to other departments throughout the medical center on issues regarding the Surgery Clinic and other matters Serves as Patient Advocate for Surgery patients and attends Patient Advocate meetings Oversees and coordinates clinic management of the Surgery Clinics; i.e., cancellations, reductions and modifications Coordinates with Business Office Supervisors and staff regarding Surgery clinic profiles and review of reports; i.e., CUSS, SPARQ, EARR, etc. Completes direct patient care in Surgery areas of responsibility as needed Resource point of contact for MSAs assigned to Surgery ASU to provide clinical guidance Provides guidance to Surgical Service Attending's and rotating Residents from affiliate Coordinates assignments with other Nurse Managers to ensure proper utilization of human resources. Stays informed regarding ASPAN Guidelines and Accreditation Readiness to include periodic inspections and education.

WORK SCHEDULE: Primarily Monday – Friday with a tour of duty between the hours of 6:00am-6:00pm. Flexibility with tour based on the case schedule. Manager may want to work a later tour if the PACU is busy. May vary to accommodate patient care needs and emergencies.

  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)(Waiver may be available). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.


  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field preferred
  • Previous successful management experience preferred
  • 5 years of professional nursing experience in critical care or surgery preferred
  • National Nursing Administration Certification preferred
  • Advance Cardiac Life Savings (ACLS) preferred

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
