Bechtel is a global provider of engineering, construction, and project management services with a reputation for excellence and innovative project delivery. An immediate opportunity exists, within our Mining and Metals business unit to be part of the ALBA Potline 6 Project in Manama, Bahrain.
The Board of Directors of Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C (ALBA) has directed the ALBA Management Team to implement the construction of Potline 6 (the “Project”) and all other necessary facilities to produce an additional 540,000 tonnes per year (tpy) (nominal) of production capacity. The Project will include key facilities such as: Green Anode Production, Anode Bake, Anode Rodding, Reduction & Reduction Services, Casthouse and all associated infrastructure and sub facilities.
The Project Leadership Team will be based in Manama, Bahrain, supported by the New Delhi Execution Unit.
Salary will be based on current market rates and the posted grade will not be adjusted to suit the successful candidate.
It is a requirement to be considered for employment to produce a Good Conduct Certificate from the CID. A certificate completed within the last 3 months will be accepted.
The Field Employee Relations/Industrial Relations (ER/IR) Supervisor is responsible to provide leadership to the ER/IR team in the establishment, implementation and administration of Project ER/IR systems & procedures, in accordance with the Project’s ER/IR Strategy.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Reports to and receives operational instruction from the HR/IR Manager.

- Provides direct supervision to the ER/IR team
Day to day operational contact with HR/IR Manager, Site Manager, Construction Manager, Project Superintendent, Area / Leads, Superintendents, functional departmental managers and Bechtel Subcontractors.
Day to day operational / functional contact with Workforce Services team.
Potential operational contact, as required, with manual craft workforce shop stewards, union organisers & officials
The ER/IR Supervisor is principally responsible for:
Understanding and personally complying with Project environmental, safety and health philosophy, systems and requirements.
Pro-actively supporting the implementation of the Project’s environmental, safety and health systems by:
Attending Tool Box meetings;
Immediately correcting observed breaches, unsafe acts or conditions;
(In the event that correction is not possible) Reporting observed breaches, unsafe acts or conditions;
Lead by example.
Leading the ER/IR team in the establishment, implementation and administration of Project ER/IR systems & procedures including:
Contractor Mobilisation / orientation process;
Performance Management & Communication program;
Industrial risk mitigation, including: development of industrial relations conditions for subcontracting; subcontracting strategy; industrial action contingency planning.
Developing and implementing audit schedule of contractors including, training, accommodation (camp), transport, crib facilitates, ablution facilities, contractor payroll and contractor compliance with local labour laws
Development & implementation of systems to minimise (industrial) risk associated with subcontracting the works & interface with Client contractors.
Ongoing identification of industrial risk & recommendation of risk mitigation strategies to the HR/IR Manager, Site Manager & Construction Manager
Ensuring Project supervision is knowledgeable of & trained in ER/IR systems.
Provision of necessary support to Project supervision in application of applicable Workplace Agreements.
Leading the ER/IR team in accordance with Project & Bechtel policies and procedures.
Production of weekly (and other) reports (e.g. historical, statistics, issue logs, etc) for Site Manager, Construction Manager & Project Superintendent.
Other tasks as designated by the Site Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ER/IR Supervisor shall be knowledgeable and/or experienced in:
Major project construction Employee / Industrial Relations in a unionised environment in Bahrain
Ability to liaise with site non-manual personnel all departments to ensure effective implementation of ER/IR systems.
Working knowledge & understanding of industrial / employment / accommodation / security / training / manual craft employee systems and their implementation.
