Electrician to support the Antarctic Support Contract and the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Program. Accomplishes hands-on electrical tasks on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Accomplishes hands-on electrical tasks on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica.

  • Performs rough wiring, power distribution wiring, and wiring of electrical equipment, maintenance, and fixtures, and installation of conduit according to the National Electric Code (NEC).

  • Advises the Electrician Foreman on job progress and material requirements.

  • Accomplishes various projects utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.

  • Must be willing to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Current Electrical license or other states’ equivalent is required.

  • Minimum four years of documented experience in all phases of electrical work, including rough wiring, power distribution wiring, wiring of electrical equipment and fixtures, and installation of conduit is required.

  • Experience in repair and maintenance of airfield lighting and/or heat tracing of outdoor insulated piping is preferred.

  • The ability to read design drawings and wiring diagrams is required.

  • Experience working with voltages up to 4160 volts is preferred.

  • Experience in commercial or industrial environment is preferred.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
