GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures.
Coordinates all on-ice activities related to remediation, monitoring programs and education with the on-ice ASC Environmental Engineer and the ASC ESH Station Lead.
Performs training and educational programs for the community with respect to environmental protection and waste management to maintain compliance with the Antarctic Treaty.
Conceives and carries out programs to ensure environmental education and awareness throughout the stations and associated field camps. Communicates with community to ensure compliance with national and international policies and regulations relating to environmental operations in the Antarctic.
Responsible for communicating with a diverse range of people. Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner. Interfaces with ASC Environmental Engineering Department, Safety, and Waste Management staff, station laboratory staff, principal investigators, and subcontractors.
Responsible for contaminated site assessment and monitoring, contaminated site remediation planning and implementation, conducting environmental field audits and reviews, environmental risk management, operations planning, and implementing field operations.
Responsible for preparing technical reports for ASC and NSF related to ASC Environmental Engineering operations. Documents may include Scopes of Work, Remedial Action Plans, Environmental Assessments, Records of Environmental Review, and other technical documents.
Maintains a working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of instrumentation, including but not limited to such general environmental monitoring laboratory equipment as photoionization detectors, oxygen meters, composite wastewater samplers, TPH and VOC analyzers, and data collection and archiving devices. Maintains a comfortable working knowledge of GPS units and field electronic data collection. Capable of operation and trouble shooting of environmental monitoring equipment associated with ASC Environmental projects.
Ensures accurate inventories of spare parts and supplies for repairing and calibrating equipment and instrumentation. Keeps an accurate inventory of all consumable laboratory supplies and is responsible for ordering new ones.
Collection and subsequent analysis of field data from contaminated soil sampling, ice core sampling, snow/ice sampling, etc. Collects environmental samples (ambient and source) for site characterization and monitoring purposes, as required. Assists in collecting and performing laboratory analysis of water and wastewater samples as required.
Responsible for data management related to environmental assessment and risk management. Maintains databases of GIS information as well as contaminate concentrations and analytical data from current and historical environmental investigations and operations.
Active member of the station spill response team.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent is required. A Bachelor degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science Biology, Chemistry or closely related field is preferred.
OSHA 40-Hr HAZWOPER Certification preferred.
Four years of responsible experience related to contaminated site assessment and remediation, environmental risk assessment, field environmental sampling, monitoring, instrumentation, laboratory analyses and data management. Excellent writing skills are expected. Scientific publication history and geographical information systems experience preferred.
Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures.
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
