Fire Equipment Maintenance Specialist


PAE is a leader in providing worldwide solutions for base operations, logistics, construction, airfield operations, and personnel placement. PAE is currently seeking a Fire Equipment Maintenance Specialist to support the Antarctic Support Contract and the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Accomplish work with compressed gas powered fire system’s including preventive maintenance, heavy repair and trouble shooting.

  • Accomplish large and small fire system repairs on hand-held fire extinguishers and compressed air foam systems (CAFS) mounted on vehicles and sleds in Antarctica.

  • Work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Perform major maintenance on compressed air foam (CAF) systems units used for, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF). These systems contain from 300 to 600 gallons of aircraft firefighting foam expelled by high-pressure compressed air and include 500 lbs. of dry chemical. These systems use “Tri-Max” technology.

  • Maintain the fire extinguisher repair shop.

  • Place CAF units into service at season start, perform minor and heavy level maintenance, and perform weekly systems checks.

  • Install, service, and repair portable water and dry chemical fire extinguishers and miscellaneous firefighting equipment and materials in accordance with NFPA and manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Recharge portable fire extinguishers; conduct 6-year maintenance, accomplish hydro-static testing and replace or repairs defective sections of hoses, pipelines, gauges and broken seals.

  • Install cabinets and brackets to hold fire extinguishers.

  • Maintain records of equipment inventory at all sites and fill out inspection tags and reports.

  • Schedule work efficiently to meet schedules and time lines.

  • Maintain records.

  • Read, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Perform all service in accordance with NFPA #10 and Life Safety Code #101 for inspections, testing, recharge/repair and maintenance of large and small extinguishers and systems.

  • Regularly lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds.

  • Maintain a rigorous work schedule involving driving and/or continuous heavy physical exertion.

  • Frequently stand for extended periods of time.

  • Frequently use hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment.

  • Frequently kneel, bend at the waist, and reach overhead.

  • Work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience installing, testing, servicing, and repairing portable fire extinguishers and fire extinguishing systems is required.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

  • Knowledge and experience with the tools, materials, and techniques used in the installation, testing, and repair of firefighting equipment.

  • Excellent English language skills including reading and writing and verbal communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with initiative under minimal direction.

  • Experience scheduling work efficiently to meet schedules and time lines.

  • Experience maintaining records.

  • The ability to read, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • The Ability to perform all service in accordance with NFPA #10 and Life Safety Code #101 for inspections, testing, recharge/repair and maintenance of large and small extinguishers and systems.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
