Light Vehicle Mechanic (Small Engine Field Support)

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Performs maintenance, diagnosis and repair of generators and small equipment, snowmobiles, and ATVs. Performs rebuilds on engines, drive trains or components or equipment. Provides training for personnel on the safe use of the above equipment.

  • Performs on-site maintenance and repair to equipment in field, as required.

  • In field camps, works as Equipment Operator as required, including, but not limited to: grooming the skiway and loading/unloading aircraft. Trains camp staff on proper equipment and vehicle usage. Contributes to field camp end of season report, as required. Required to perform a variety of tasks, such as shoveling, cargo organization and movement, and fueling aircraft, vehicles and buildings.

  • Maintains detailed records on all work performed and completes work orders.

  • Operates and maintains equipment including: arc welders, oxygen/acetylene torches, compressors, presses, air tools, electric power tools, fork lifts, grooming equipment, etc.

  • Assists MEC Shop Foreman/Camp Manager with daily operations. In field camps may be required to assist the heavy equipment mechanic with taskings.

  • Maintains a clean, orderly and safe work area.

  • Performs duties in support of metrics (as provided by the supervisor).

  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether they can be directly or indirectly, effected by job duties.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.

  • Maintains workplace program and ensures safety is the highest priority in the work place.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High School diploma or equivalent. Two years training at a technical school is preferred.

  • A valid US Driver's license is required. Wilderness First Responder Certification is preferred.

  • A minimum of four years experience in maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline small engines and generators is required. Experience in snowmobile or ATV maintenance and repair and/or maintenance of tracked vehicles such as Tucker Sno-Cats and Pisten Bullys is preferred. Previous cold weather experience is preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • May be required to successfully complete a psychological examination as required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica during the Austral Winter Season.

  • US citizenship is required.

  • Must be willing and able to life and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
