Plumber Apprentice

Apprentice or craftsman in the plumber trade. Assists and/or accomplishes plumbing work on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Accomplishes hands-on plumbing tasks on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica.

  • Performs cutting, fitting, connection, and installation of plumbing piping with some direction from a plumber or supervisor.

  • Accomplishes installation and maintenance of plumbing, fittings and fixtures in accordance with the Uniform Plumbing Code.

  • Maintains various plumbing systems both inside and outside of buildings.

  • Advises Plumber Foreman on job progress and material requirements.

  • May be required to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum two years of documented experience in plumbing work, including piping and fixture installation is required. Experience working with a variety of pipe materials and fittings is preferred. The ability to read design drawings and knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) is preferred. Experience in an industrial or commercial environment is preferred.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
