Plumber Foreman

Directly oversee department operations with relation to plumbing and supervision of plumbing staff. Participate in goal-setting processes and strategic planning for mission support with other department leaders and I&O Management. Contribute to a safe working environment by coordinating employee trainings and identification and mitigation of environmental and job hazards. Maintain effective communications between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings. Provide suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring, termination and advancement of staff. Routinely utilize Independent judgment and discretion to solve problems and identify potential issues.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Implements and maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Accomplishes supervision and hands-on plumbing tasks on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica.

  • Performs and supervises cutting, fitting, connection, and installation of plumbing piping.

  • Accomplishes installation and maintenance of plumbing, fittings, and fixtures, in accordance with the Uniform Plumbing Code.

  • Maintains various plumbing systems both inside and outside of buildings.

  • Advises the Construction Coordinator and/or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor on job progress and material requirements.

  • Accomplishes various projects utilizing design drawings, specifications, and diagrams.

  • Works outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person.

  • Communicates, both orally and in writing, with their subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Current plumbing license and/or certification or other state’s equivalent required.

  • Minimum eight years of documented plumbing experience including three years of supervisor, lead or foreman experience in all phases of plumbing work, including piping and fixture installation, is required.

  • The ability to read design drawings and specifications is required.

  • Experience working with a variety of pipe materials and fittings is preferred.

  • Experience in an industrial or commercial environment is preferred.

  • Backflow Prevention certification is preferred.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
