Service Writer - MEC

Initiates equipment services and repairs by ascertaining performance problems and services requested; develops estimates; writing repair orders; maintaining customer rapport and records. Coordinates with shop foreman on job assignments to service technicians and communicates job status to customers.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Ascertains mechanical problems and services by listening to customer's description of symptoms; clarifying description of problems; conducting inspections; taking test drives; checking vehicle maintenance records; examining service schedules.

  • Develops estimates by ascertaining materials availability, supplies, and labor using Maximo work order system

  • Prepares Work Orders (WO) by validating discrepancies describing symptoms, problems, and causes discovered, as well as repairs and services required; obtaining approval signatures

  • Maintains customer rapport by explaining estimates and expected return of equipment; answering questions and concerns; scheduling maintenance times with customer

  • Reports fleet in-commission rates, deadline report and deferred maintenance reports to the MEC supervisor

  • Maintains equipment records by recording problems and corrective actions planned.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading manufacturers' publications.

  • Enhances organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to customers experience and level of service.

  • Must be proficient in the operation of the mechanical equipment we issue to the customer. Able to instruct end users in the operation and basic field repair of portable generators, hole melting equipment, ice drilling equipment, snow mobiles and other gear. Must be able to train operators of light vehicles (Pick-up trucks, Snow Cats and tracked equipped pickup trucks.

  • Schedule training classes for the end users when they arrive in McMurdo.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in vehicle/equipment operation.

  • Two (2) years training at a technical school is highly desirable.

  • Valid, unexpired U.S. Vehicle Operators License required.

  • Experience performing equipment maintenance.

  • Must be able to lift, bend and stoop to accomplish job tasking.

  • Critical problem-solving and decision making ability.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Attention to detail extremely important.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working in extreme outdoors weather conditions.

  • Must be able to use sound judgment and possess solid decision making ability to quickly, safely and effectively solve problems.

  • Must have computer experience and be able to learn and utilize (Maximo) work order and timesheet software programs.

  • Must be able to professionally and effectively communicate both orally and in writing to management, staff, colleagues and Program Officials.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
