The Urology Physician Assistant provides specialty care to veterans with general Urology disorders as well as erectile dysfunction or other sexual health issues. The Urology Physician Assistant is a contact person for General Urology disorders and the key contact for patients with erectile dysfunction. The Urology Physician Assistant reports directly to the Chief of Urology. Care is provided in the urology clinic. Their office is located in the clinic itself to facilitate communication and collaboration.

Physician Assistant primary responsibilities include:

  1. Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care of the patient with GU disorders, erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or other sexual health concerns.
  2. Initial screening, history and physical examinations, obtaining and interpreting routine diagnostic and radiological testing, laboratory tests, and related to the patient with GU disorders and for ED
  3. Management of the GU and ED patient from initial entry to the clinic to the completion of a satisfactory treatment option.
  4. Coordinates urologic treatments and follow-up care for the GU patient and all ED clinic activities.
  5. Consults other clinics in the hospital when indicated.
  6. Provides general education for GU disorders and erectile dysfunction to the patient, their partner, family members, colleagues and other disciplines within the VAMC, the VISN and the medical community at large.
  7. Responsible for the development of ED clinic policies and procedures as well as the development of patient education materials for patients with ED and their partners including written, video, or group education.
  8. Promotes overall wellness for the GU and ED patient, including non-pharmacologic treatment
  9. Collaborates with other disciplines to provide a concise, comprehensive delivery of care to ensure positive health care outcomes and promote wellness.
  10. Encourages the development of healthy lifestyles.
  11. Acts as a consultant and resource to the VAMC staff and the community at large.
  12. Identifies and actively participates in GU and ED research

May initiate and/or expedite requests for consultations, special tests, or studies on assigned patients, and will keep the supervising physician apprised of the results.

May order: EKG's, "Confine and Escort" and Code "S", suicide status as necessary.

May order and/or catheterize the bladder, including indwelling Foley catheters.

May counsel patients on living wills, and may order Do Not Resuscitate, and Do Not Intubate status in

Accordance with VA policy.

May conduct: nasogastric intubation, suturing/closure of simple lacerations, incision, drainage or debriding and care of minor superficial wounds, dressing changes, and bladder irrigations.

Cleans RME (Reusable Medical Equipment) per SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

Unique competencies required for this role include:

  1. Specialized knowledge and expertise in the care of patients with urologic disorders and men with erectile dysfunction and other sexual health issues.
  2. Outstanding interpersonal communication and coordination skills.
  3. In depth knowledge of Urologic health and medical conditions that cause urologic disorders.
  4. In depth knowledge of sexual health and those medical/psychosocial conditions that cause sexual health issues
  5. Knowledge of key contacts both within the medical center, at other VISN facilities, and in the community so as to effectively facilitate the patient's transition across the continuum of care.

  2. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.


    1. Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
  • Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.
  • If a PA’s NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
