The Central Alabama Veteran Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama, Monroeville, Alabama, and Columbus Georgia. The Primary Duty Station for this position is at the Montgomery Campus. The incumbent will be required to work on site at the other locations as required.

The Associate Director for Patient Care Services is member of CAVHCS senior management team, along with the Health Care System Director, the Associate Director, and the Chief of Staff. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services assigned areas of responsibility and organizational authority include; Nursing Service, Social Work Service, Pastoral Care Service, and Sterile Processing and Decontamination. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services serves as the Acting Health Care System Director as assigned.

The Associate Director for Patient Care Services is the top executive for CAVHCS nursing services and programs and is a key member of the executive leadership team of the organization, involved in strategic planning, organizational assessment, and program development. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services reports to the Health Care System Director. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services has the authority and responsibility for establishing standards of nursing practice and ensuring the continuous and timely availability of quality nursing services. She/he is the chief spokesperson for organized nursing services and is the catalyst for the integration and collaboration of nursing with other professional disciplines and functional areas in the mutual achievement of patient-centered and organizational goals. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services is the Nurse Executive for this facility and its associated community-based outpatient clinics. He/she is responsible for the practice of nursing 24/7 by registered nurses, advance practice nurses, and allied health staff (LPNs, NAs, etc.) regardless of line authority. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services exercises final authority and approval over nursing job descriptions, nursing care policies and procedures; nursing standards of patient care, treatment, and services; standards of nursing practice; nurse staffing plans; and standards to measure, assess, and improve patient outcomes. He/she ensures that all registered nurses, advance practice nurses, and licensed practical nurses are licensed, certified, and/or registered upon employment and thereafter. He/she ensures a competency process is in place to evaluate individual practice, as well as a review process for annual performance ratings. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services participates fully in upper-level management decisions to speak on behalf of nursing and is a member of all medical center-level Councils and Committees that govern and influence the operations of the medical center, such as the Executive Leadership board, Health System Council and the Executive Resource Board.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations:The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates:

  • Nurse V - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN (or a Bachelor's degree in a related field) and approximately 5-6 years of nursing practice/experience;* OR* a Doctoral degree (preferred) in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience.

*Reference: * VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard.

*Preferred Experience: *

Master's prepared or Doctoral degree in nursing and approximately 4-5 year's progressive leadership experience.

ANCC Certification as a Nurse Executive, Advanced is preferred.

Prior leadership experience that demonstrates ability to manage a complex nursing section with diverse programs.

Experience improving the quality and effectiveness of a facility's overall health care program by providing leadership, coordinating and facilitating the evaluation and improvement of a wide range of programs.

Knowledge of the VA health care delivery system.

Demonstrated skill in providing organizational leadership, or facilitation, in the achievement of goals within a healthcare setting.

Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work with a variety of health care professionals and other key staff including high level officials.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
