The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama, Monroeville, Alabama and Columbus Georgia. The primary duty station for this position is at the Montgomery Campus. The incumbent will be required to work on site at the other locations as required.

The Pulmonologist evaluates and treats pulmonary and sleep conditions on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Outpatient clinics will be held on both the Montgomery and Tuskegee campuses. Traditional and non-traditional modalities of care will be used. The Pulmonologist must have critical care skills, interpret PFTs and sleep studies and perform procedures including but not limited to CVP placement, intubation, bronchoscopy, etc. The Pulmonologist may be assigned to act as the ICU Director/Attending duties in the absence of the ICU Director. The Pulmonologist rotates on-call with one other Pulmonologist on a regular basis. He/She also may work off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S Citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Completion of first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

  • BLS/ACLS: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification is required.
  • Board Certification/Eligible: Board certification or eligibility in Pulmonary Medicine.
  • Minimum of one-year direct patient care post fellowship.

Physical Requirements:Standing, walking, lifting light loads, assisting patients with positioning and transfers. Must be able to use a computer to input orders, review reports etc. Must be able to communicate directions and patient orders. Light lifting (under 15lbs), light carrying (under 15lbs), use of fingers, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability, working closely with others, working alone, and working with biohazardous materials.
