Description/Job Summary

The Conflicts Analyst is responsible for reviewing and analyzing new client and matter intake forms, gathering of information and verification of entity and party information, and application of business rules to search criteria necessary for the Firm to determine whether or not it may accept new clients and matters under prevailing ethical rules, applicable law and internal policies.


  • Assist Conflict Attorneys with analyzing and responding to conflict check inquiries

  • Supervise members of the Conflicts Management Group on various matters; prepare and obtain conflicts waivers; implement the Firm s restricted list procedures and quarterly audit; establish and monitor ethical screens and conduct conflict checks for lateral hires

  • Review new intake forms with an understanding of commercial and litigious matters ensuring submitted party information is correct and to identify instances where party information provided is incomplete

  • Gather information from internal/external databases and from attorneys involved to conduct factual research on prospective clients or involved parties and to determine the status of relevant matters and in order to establish whether a conflict of interest exists

  • Review and verify open/closed dates; ascertain the nature of an entity s role in a particular matter; research corporate history of clients and parties affiliated to new client work

  • Review client engagement letters, new matter requests and confer with Firm attorney to determine whether conflicts of interest exist with respect to prospective representations

  • Respond to inquiries regarding conflicts and other engagement risk issues; communicate findings to Partners and Conflicts Attorneys with accuracy, confidence and professionalism; clear matters for particular practice groups should conflicts issues require resolution

  • Review reports with the Conflicts and Intake Supervisor and fellow team members to ensure search criteria applied produces appropriate data generated in conflicts report

  • Process client and matter revisions; ensure data is updated with appropriate and valid information

  • Work closely with staff members in the department, lawyers, paralegals, secretaries and other levels of management; assist with utilization of research applications

  • Assist with other duties related to the resolution and clearance of the conflicts of interest issues; perform projects and other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • 2 to 4 years experience working for a corporation or financial institution in an analyst capacity

  • Understanding of the type of work undertaken by a large global law firm along with an appreciation of commercial and legal terms

  • Knowledge of ethical rules and risk management requirements governing conflicts of interest and conflicts resolution processes

  • Ability to articulate an understanding of legal relationships and the nature of representations undertaken

  • Must have issue tracking, follow up, and resolution skills

  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly, concisely, and diplomatically both verbally and in writing

  • Proficiency using research applications such as Dun & Bradstreet, Capital IQ, and Hoover s

  • Ability to learn and utilize specialized internal conflict checking software and multiple software applications and workflow processes of various departments

  • Ability to perform tasks accurately with attention to detail

  • Ability to analyze and summarize conflict situations, articulate potential issues, and suggest resolutions to attorneys as required

  • Ability to apply both logical and common sense understanding to carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, and diagram forms

  • Exhibit a high degree of initiative in exercising independent judgment and decision making in order to handle multiple functions in a fast-paced, detail oriented work environment and adapt quickly to changes in workflow, processes and procedures

  • Must be well organized, able to spend time on what is important, quickly zeroing in on critical tasks, sensing what will help or hinder accomplishing a tasks, eliminate roadblocks and see a project through from start to finish

  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to provide a quality, accurate, and efficient work product in a high-volume environment are necessary

  • Ability to manage complex projects and assignments while maintaining tight deadlines

  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel in a global market with tact and diplomacy

  • Proven follow-through skills and the ability to troubleshoot

  • Flexibility to work additional hours, different shifts (such as night shift), or weekends as needed

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience in conflicts and intake preferred

  • Knowledge of Elite a plus
