The Northport VA Medical Center is seeking Medical Instrument Technicians for the Sleep lab to perform the duties of a Polysomnographic Technician (Sleep Tech) to work various shifts on a fee per day basis.

This is a "Fee Basis" position. Tour of duty will be 8:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. when needed

Pay Rate for this Fee Basis appointment is $250.00 PER VISIT


The position is a Medical Instrument Technician located in the Sleep Laboratory of the Pulmonary Section under the Medicine Department at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Technician interacts fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare. Incumbent will conduct full sleep studies including overnight studies and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep. Incumbent anticipates problems likely to occur during the sleep study and prepares for such situations, makes changes in established procedures, or recommends alternative courses of action.

The Technician conducts sleep study procedures that include patient setups, sleep screening tests, polysomnograms (PSG), multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) and troubleshooting, analysis, sleep staging, and video EEG monitoring, in the Sleep Laboratory where conditions requires setting up, operating and troubleshooting diagnostic equipment during on-site testing.

The technician performs pressure titration during N-CPAP and BIPIAP trials, determining appropriate pressure setting and efficacy of the appliance while the study is in progress.

Duties Include:

*Conduct testing on patients per protocol indicated by phsycian. Apply EEG electrodes and other sensors to pateient.

*Monitor recordings

*Conduct NPSG (nocturnal polysomnography) calibrations and recordings with minimal assistance

*Conduct NPSGs, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) and bi-level pressure titration protocols.

*Maintain accurate patient records/charts

*Perform proper maintenance of instrumentation equipment and clinical setting

*Perform sleep recording protocols (PSG, CPAP/BiPAP, NSLT, MWT) as scheduled

Basic Requirements:

  • US Citizenship (Non Citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)
  • Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: There is no requirement for this occupation. However, it is stronglydesirable as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Registration is offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) AND Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certifications are strongly desirable.
  • Physical Requirements: Candidates must meet the physical requirements of this position.
  • English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Qualification Requirements:

For this position, we are seeking well qualified, experienced Sleep Technicians who can perform the assignment of duties at the full performance level under normal supervision.

At least 1 year of experience performing a full range of standard, but complex, polysomnography examinations with responsibility for properly and accurately calibrating all instruments prior to the beginning of the PSG tracing and selection of appropriate electrode montages and sensitivity and filter settings to elicit the best possible tracings. Independently determine the need for CPAP during all night sleep studies for sleep apnea. This may be demonstrated with at least 4-5 years of Sleep Technician experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  1. Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders.

  2. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form.

  3. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc) and ability to take appropriate action.

  4. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians.

Creditable Experience - Knowledge of Current Medical Instrument Technician Practices. to be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics associated with current Medical Instrument Technician practice appropriate to sleep studies.

Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it is equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (as described above) and is directly related to this position.

Part Time Experience. Part time experience is credited according to its relationship to a full time work week.

Physical Requirements:Position requires ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment to record electrical potentials as well as computers in the acquisition and analysis of recorded data. The Polysomnography Technician must be able to assist patients on and off bedside tables. Positions requires heavy lifting (up to 60 pounds); heavy carrying (up to 60 pounds); straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; long periods of standing, repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision; and hearing.
