The Oklahoma City VA Health Care System (OKC VA HCS) is recruiting for a full time Physician Assistant for the Cardio-Thoracic Section of Surgery Service. The OKC VA HCS is an active teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • First assists during cardio-thoracic procedures including harvesting vein with direct Attending physician supervision.
  • Reviews consults.
  • Coordinates appointments.
  • Evaluates patients in the clinic and in the hospital.
  • Orders diagnostic studies.
  • Prescribes medication within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice.
  • Performs H&P; exams on in-patients and outpatients.
  • Removes sutures, chest tubes and pacemaker wires.
  • Writes progress notes on patients.
  • Assists in research projects.
  • Performs venous and arterial punctures.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (Compressed Tours negotiable)

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship**. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Education: Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Certification: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). NOTE: Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by the VA on a temporary basis for a period of not to exceed two years. (Certification must be uploaded with your application package)

  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of Physician Assistant experience in a surgical clinical setting.
  • Experience in an ICU setting.

Physical Requirements: Position requires moderate to heavy lifting and carrying, pushing, walking and standing for extended periods, ability for simultaneous rapid and mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4 (one eye, glasses permitted), ability to distinguish basic colors, emotional and mental stability; hearing aid permitted. Incumbents may experience exposure to blood and body fluids.
