United Illuminating Company Engineer - Infrastructure Planning in Orange, Connecticut

The Engineer will have a central role in developing, planning and executing the strategic replacement of UI's aging distribution infrastructure. Must be able to prepare infrastructure replacement technical analysis and reports for internal and external use including the impact to reliability of the Electric System. The Engineer will work with a team responsible for the development of short and long range plans to meet the infrastructure replacement requirements of the Deliver Electricity process. Work closely with the Project Management, Distribution Planning, Distribution Engineering and System Maintenance areas to develop, plan and coordinate the condition assessment and analysis of Distribution Asset classes (such as cable, transformers, switchgear, etc.) Work with minimal guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform moderately complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services.

  • Solve moderately complex engineering problems. Takes a new prospective on established solutions. E.g. forensic analysis, material evaluations, material applications and construction standards.

  • Prepare, maintain and understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams). Develop and specify equipment, assemble documents and other requirements for assignments of moderate to complex level of difficulty.

  • Represent Infrastructure Planning on project teams (e.g. cable, splice chambers, switches and vaults). Compile, analyze & summarize information of Distribution assets (extract information from inspection programs & other work).

  • Guide, mentor & review the engineering work of others. Interpret & make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs. Explains difficult issues and works to establish consensus.

  • Promote cross functional teamwork on assigned tasks and projects. Assist in guiding and mentoring engineers in engineering methodology. Manages and provides direction for resources outside of the department.

  • Works independently to address moderately complex problems in standard and non - standard situations. Apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & UI polices/procedures.

  • Interprets processes and standards related to electrical equipment. Recommends solutions and best practices for standard and non – standard solutions. Represents Infrastructure Planning on projects, task forces and studies.

  • Assists in the development of business cases & manage small projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable UI guidelines. Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program.

  • Forecast, plan, schedule, monitor and control budget/estimates. Develops Infrastructure Planning processes & tools to support the processes. Aide in review/development of inspection criteria Distribution assets. Supports rate case & regulatory efforts.

  • Able to explain difficult issues and work to establish consensus. Able to work in a cross-functional team and guide or mentor other team members.


This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college/university and five years of experience performing engineering duties. Possess in depth experience in infrastructure engineering along with knowledge of related business practices and procedures.
