Officially established in October 2006, the Orlando VA Medical Center is one of the Top 100 Companies in Central Florida for working families. The Orlando VA Medical Center includes the following facilities; a 120-bed Community Living Center and a 60-bed Residential Rehabilitation Program (located at the Lake Nona Campus), Outpatient Clinics in Orlando (Lake Baldwin), Viera and Daytona Beach and four Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Tavares, and Orange City. Our new medical center is currently open for many outpatient services and will continue to open more services, including inpatient beds and an emergency department, throughout 2016. The new 65-acre medical campus has 134-inpatient beds and provides acute care, complex specialty care, advanced diagnostic services, a large multispecialty outpatient clinic, and administrative and support services.

The mission of the Specialty Care Center of Innovation is improving access to care by increasing capacity and decreasing wait times utilizing virtual modalities, to include but not limited to E-Consult and Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT). The Physician (Surgeon Clinical Educator) is responsible and accountable for directing, coordinating, and participating in the delivery of care through ongoing initiatives and pilots focused on increasing efficiency and the use of Virtual Care modalities, while serving as a champion of these services to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and multi-disciplinary care teams. The incumbent is expected to collaborate with various professions and sub-specialties to deliver tailored programs targeted to VHA specific access needs.

The physician educator supports the Vision, Mission, and Values of VA, VHA, and the Southeast Specialty Care Center of Innovation. He/she helps implement programs to assure staff competence in providing care for patients in Specialty Care settings, utilizing concepts and pilot programs of Specialty Care Transformation, taking into consideration population-specific needs, including diagnoses and physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs. The physician educator also assists employee development, assisting clinical areas and individuals to develop and implement learning plans as well as system redesign efforts. The physician educator will perform data analysis to identify access needs as well as develop plans to address them via optimal resource utilization. Collaboration between the Center of Innovation, VHACO, regional VAMCs, VA Learning Organization/VHA Employee Education System, SimLearn, and the Virtual Medical Center is required.

The incumbent works under the broad supervision of the Chief of the Southeast Specialty Care Center of Innovation and applicable service line Chief and is responsible and accountable for the overall leadership, policy planning, operations of the center, and education of care models for the Medicine and Surgery specialties including but not limited to:

  • Education for the delivery of Veteran centered high quality and high value outpatient and inpatient care in Medicine and Surgery.
  • Ensuring continuous and effective operation of each specialty within the service line.
  • Responsible for the activities within the service including human resource management, succession planning, and program evaluation.
  • Collaboration with providers, facility leadership, and outside customers.
  • Serves as a member of various committees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

(NOTE: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on patient care needs, including weekends, holidays, and nights.)

Salary will be reviewed by the Physician Pay Panel who will make a recommendation to Medical Center Director who has final approval. Salary is based on Specialty and experience

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:All applicants must meet the following basic requirements.

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Education.Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Medical Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

Licensure.Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.

Residency/Fellowship Training.Completion of an accredited residency training program in a surgical specialty. Completion of a fellowship in surgical specialty after residency is highly preferred.

Board Certification (highly preferred).Board certified or eligible in a surgical specialty.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
