Construction Superintendant


Supervises the construction and installation programs through management of trades personnel. Participate in goal-setting processes and strategic planning for mission support with other department leaders and I&O Management. Contribute to a safe working environment by coordinating employee trainings and identification and mitigation of environmental and job hazards. Maintain effective communications between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings. Provide suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring, termination and advancement of staff. Routinely utilize Independent judgment and discretion to solve problems and identify potential issues.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace, #1

  • Accomplishes project planning, scheduling, materials take-offs, and direct supervision of maintenance and construction projects.

  • Keeps the Project Manager, informed of the status of projects and other activities.

  • Assists in the development of plans and schedules for maintenance and construction projects.

  • Coordinates maintenance and construction activities with the work centers, and with other construction coordinators.

  • Supervises maintenance and construction projects following project plans and specifications, and project schedules.

  • Reports project progress in relation to project schedules, and updates schedules at required intervals.

  • Identifies required design and specification changes prior to construction, and assists with as-built drawings during the construction process.

  • May be required to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • At least five years of responsible construction supervision experience is required.

  • Experience supervising craft foreman and craftsmen, project scheduling, and project cost estimating is required.

  • Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
