Support the Antarctic Support Contract and the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program, accomplishing hands-on refrigeration maintenance and repair on maintenance and construction projects as needed.
GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures.Accomplishes refrigeration installation and maintenance tasks on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on refrigeration and cooling equipment in accordance with the preventive maintenance program. This includes installation and startup of refrigeration and cooling equipment utilizing special tools and equipment. Advises the Preventive Maintenance Foreman on job progress and material requirements. Keeps refrigeration inventory up to date and orders replacement parts as needed. Acts as EPA required “Refrigerant Manager” for CFC tracking, leak detection and reporting functions. Works with all electrical components from disconnect throughout equipment. Accomplishes various projects utilizing design drawings, diagrams, and specifications. Submit reports as required by supervisor. Must be able to lift the safety regulation maximum. May be required to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.Supports the achievement of metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position’s work activities. Complies with all Environmental Safety and Health and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
Performs other duties as required.
High school graduate or GED is required.
Refrigeration License required.
CFC Certificate preferred.
Minimum 4 years experience required in refrigeration mechanic work, including installation and maintenance of refrigeration equipment.
Ability to read design drawings and diagrams is preferred.
Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
