Engineering technicians perform one or more of the following functions. Applies engineering techniques, principles and precedents to develop, design, modify, install, test, evaluate, or operate electrical, electronic, avionics, mechanical, communications, stores, armament/ordnance, or related data processing systems for military weapon systems, associated support equipment or facilities, automotive or small craft. Maintains, repairs, inspects, troubleshoots, or programs equipment and components. Reviews, analyzes, develops, prepares or applies engineering, technical or maintenance specifications, policies, standards, or procedures. Organizes, analyzes, and prepares reports or presentation of technical data and information. Plans and performs tests and evaluations on systems, equipment or components. Compiles, processes, reduces, and analyzes test data and results. Performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed. Selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment using fully applicable precedents. Receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed. Performs recurring work independently. Work is reviewed for technical adequacy at completion. Provide training to lower level technicians.

Other Experience, Skills, Requirements, and Information:

  • The unlicensed crew are directly accountable to the Mate or his relief.

  • They performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment, paints the ship and tow, cleaning the interior and exterior of the ship including the quarters, wheelhouse, galley, heads and companionways and other cleaning duties as directed by the Mate.

  • Make up and breaking the tow, standing lookout or riding the head of the tow as a lookout and performing various tasks necessary to carry out the above such as operating winches and line handing, including splicing and throwing lines.

  • In addition, when assigned to watch duty, this incumbent performs a variety of duties, including looking for obstructions in path of vessel, steering vessel, serving on security patrol, and standing gangway watch.

  • They may be required to prepare meals as directed by the master of the ship.

  • Must possess the appropriate Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)

  • Vessel Masters require Coast Guard licenses of appropriate tonnage for vessel being operated.

  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.

  • Travel Required up to 120 days a year

  • Works with Hazards materials.

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Successful completion of technical school, trade school, or advanced armed services technical school curriculum or course in electricity, electronics, avionics, mechanics, armaments/ordnance, or engineering technology; or completion of at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of courses at an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical curriculum.

  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in performing the stated functions.

Possess a valid driver’s license.

U S Citizenship required and ability to obtain a US DoD Interim Secret Security clearance within 45 days of hire, granted a Secret clearance, and ability to maintain clearance throughout employment. If the position requires a clearance.
