Major Duties:**

The Philadelphia VA Medical Center seeks board-certified or board-eligible physicians in internal medicine to work in its Medical Intensive Care Unit. Candidates must be physically capable of completing shift work, including some nights. Recent critical care or emergency medicine experience, which may include the period of residency training, as well as BCLS and ACLS certification, is mandatory. The salary range for the position is $150,000 to $170,000, based on prior training and experience. A generous benefits package is provided. An opportunity for additional “performance pay” also exists.

Work schedules are based on 8or 12 hour shifts. The majority of shifts are days with an aim at scheduling shifts on consecutive days to preserve continuity. Nighttime, holiday and weekend coverage are also expected. Full time appointment is 40 hrs per week. However, part time applicants will be considered. The MICU staff consist of six physicians and four physician extenders (PA/NP). Required skills include performance of invasive procedures including central venous catheterization, arterial catheterization, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture.

The Philadelphia VA MICU is a sixteen-bed combined medical and cardiac unit. Medical and surgical subspecialties are available on-site or on call. Anesthesia practitioners are in house 24/7. No pediatric care is provided, and gynecologic care is limited. An electronic medical record is used for all clinical documentation. The Philadelphia VA Medical Center is located near, and affiliated with, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Citizenship: Must be a United States Citizen (non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

English-language proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Colleges for the year the degree was granted; (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year which the degree was granted; (3) Schools (including foreign schools accepted by the licensing body of the State, Territory or Commonwealth or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the state, territory or commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

All individuals:

(1) Must meet basic qualification standards for appointment. Clinical privileges must be recommended by the chief, staff/professional standards board as granted by the director of the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. Incumbent must provide complete credentials and privileging information in a timely expeditious way. Board certification or board eligibility in Internal medicine is required. Recent critical care or emergency medicine experience, which may include the period of residency training, as well as BCLS and ACLS certification is mandatory. Incumbent must be competent in performing invasive procedures including central venous catheterization, arterial catheterization, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture.
