The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System is seeking a plastic reconstructive surgeon. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for coverage of the plastic surgery service and is expected to have experience in performing reconstructive procedures including breast, head & neck, abdominal wall, and soft tissue. Expertise in all microsurgical reconstruction procedures/techniques is required, and the ideal candidate will have a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in hand surgery. Duties for this position will include teaching fellows, residents, and medical students. Responsibilities include managing hospitalized patients, managing all phases of plastic surgical and hand surgery interventions from pre-operative evaluation to post-operative follow-up, attend to plastics clinic, regular 24/7 on call availability and strong commitment to academic pursuits. Successful candidates must have credentials to qualify for a full- or part-time VA appointment and a faculty appointment in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
VAPHS is closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and therefore requires that candidates meet the criteria for an academic appointment.
Work Schedule: Part-Time, M-F (Specific schedule will be determined upon appointment)

At times, you may encounter Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over): Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted. - Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Reference:VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard.* *This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
EDUCATION:Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
FOREIGN EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specialized in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs. APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE: Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.)
