Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operate, inspect, monitor and maintain in a safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound manner steam plant equipment (i.e. Boiler/HRSG equipment, Turbines and associated auxiliary equipment, Fuel Systems, Plant Auxiliary Systems includes valves, pumps, blowers, environmental control process equipment, and water treatment systems.

  • Operate, inspect, monitor and maintain in a safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound manner chilling plant equipment (i.e. chillers/absorbers, pumps, filters, cooling towers and associated equipment).

  • Operate, inspect, monitor and maintain in a safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound manner gas turbine plant equipment.

  • Perform chemical tests on boiler, cooling and chilled water systems.

  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings to troubleshoot plant equipment to resolve operational problems.

  • Perform routine electrical switching of switchgear 13.8 Kv and below.

  • Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.

  • works with other operators and maintenance personnel to teach proper operating procedures to all personnel.

  • Perform plant maintenance and cleaning duties as directed.

  • Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift and daily logs as directed by plant operational procedures.

  • Perform routine cleaning of administrative and work areas.

  • Employee must arrange own transportation to work location(s).

  • All candidates are expected to be qualified as Plant Operator within 3 months of hiring.

  • Other duties and tasks may be assigned at the company's discretion

Desirable Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of gas turbine and heat recovery boiler operations and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of steam plant system operations and basic plant principles used daily in decision making and work tasks.

  • Knowledge of absorption chiller operations and maintenance

  • Knowledge of centrifugal chiller operations and maintenance

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation of the generating station

  • Knowledge of maintenance areas such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, etc.

  • Familiarity with Maintenance Management Software similar to Maximo or MPW

  • Ability to handle multiple task or assignments at the same time

  • Ability to Tag Out/Lock Out equipment per NRG Tag Out/Lock Out procedure

  • Ability to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to perform flow, pressure and meter calculation

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals.

  • Ability to communicate plant system and equipment conditions on to others

  • Ability to perform checks (e.g., PM's) on running and idle equipment

  • Ability to perform regulatory safety and environmental inspections

  • Ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel

  • Ability to discern assorted colors

  • Ability to record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters

  • Ability to work without supervision inspection while carrying out duties

  • Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift, plant vehicle, etc.)

  • Ability to use a personal computer and associates software

  • Ability to perform routine laboratory tests and analysis on samples from steam generation processes (i.e. boiler water, make-up demineralizer, etc.)

  • Ability to operate various computer systems to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data

  • Ability to generate work notifications for execution of equipment repair

  • Ability to communicate information clearly in English, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to assist Operators and Maintenance personnel in performance testing

  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment

Physical Requirements

  • Thermal Plant Environment - work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures; around rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 50 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet, or greater.

  • Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices

  • Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day

  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crisis where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations

  • Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.

  • Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.

  • Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment

  • Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body

  • work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual)

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required (i.e. steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses, etc.)

  • Must have the ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals

  • Must have the ability to discern assorted colors

Education/Licenses/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED;

  • 5 years power plant control room, plant operator or Auxiliary Operator or 5 years in technical trade such as plumbing, electrical or welding or 5 years military technical experience operating high pressure steam boilers, electric power generating equipment, steam or gas turbines, diesel engines and auxiliaries or a Navy nuke or maritime or trade school graduate with Associates degree with steam training or a vet who held a rank of E-5 in a technical rate working in nuclear, gas turbine, steam, diesel or electrical power systems

  • NJ Blue Seal Steam License preferred or be able to obtain one within 6 months.

  • NJ Blue Seal Refrigeration ( Non-Hazardous) License preferred or be able to obtain one within 1 year.

  • Must live within 50 miles or willing to relocate within 50 miles of Princeton

  • Must be able to qualify for a Transportation Work Identification Credential

  • Must have a valid driver s license in NJ, NY or Pa, or able to get a valid driver s license in these states.

  • Familiarity with SAP, Red Tag and MS Office programs a plus

  • Successful candidates will be required to receive a rating on Recommended on the NRG Pre-employment Assessment test.
