The Regional Director, Banking is accountable to provide technical leadership and execute all aspects of Platinum Banking including strategy, client experience, human resources and operational effectiveness in their assigned regions. The role is accountable for the capability development of Platinum Banking professionals and the profit and loss statement in each of the regions they cover. Reporting to the National Director, Platinum Banking, the Regional Director, Banking drives a strategic vision for the line of business over a 3-5 year timeframe and implements strategic and change management initiatives within their assigned regions. Working as part of the management team in each region, the role is guided by the Market Leader in integrating the offer and collaborating across line of business. The Regional Director, Banking is also accountable for oversight of complex Platinum Banking deals, and providing specialized coaching and training of Platinum Banking professionals.

A strong cross-functional relationship exists with Market Managers, the Regional Director, Operations, Senior Manager, Professional Services and the other Regional Directors to bring together the desired client experience both profitably and in compliance with BMOFG policy.

Key Accountabilities


  • Build and sustain a team of indirect reports who are capable of delivering the performance required for Platinum Banking, including coaching, the creation and implementation of training and development plans, and career conversations

  • Establish and optimize team integration by articulating the linkages between the accountabilities and authorities of different roles across the group, by establishing the context in which they will work collaboratively with one another and by sharing best practices across regions

  • Ensure all integrating mechanisms are in place for all professionals in order to facilitate team behaviours and the focus on the integrated offer (e.g., appropriate training across product lines)

  • Apply the Bank’s performance management system to Private Bankers in concert with Market Managers as well as ; provide input to establishing goals and objectives, assessing skilled knowledge gaps, allocating resources to achieve objectives and close gaps, assessing personal effectiveness, and reviewing and recommending performance ratings as well as base and variable pay as it relates to Platinum Banking expertise and performance

  • Ensure the effective implementation of Bank initiatives and programs through the establishment of appropriate context and setting of direction for direct and indirect reports by providing relevant information, establishing goals, and setting limits with the context and prescribed limits of the National Director, Platinum Banking

  • Provide input to Market Manager on succession planning to ensure the Platinum Banking functions are effectively staffed at all times with properly qualified individuals.

B.Strategy & Business Development

  • Participate on each region’s leadership team as active participant in bringing the market strategy to life

  • Provide input on the national Platinum Banking strategy focused on delivering business results nationally and then develop a pan-regional strategic vision over a 3-5 year period in alignment with the overall Platinum Banking national strategy; execute the strategic vision locally by collaborating with each Market Leader and regional leadership team

  • Set direction, standards and governance for regional Platinum Banking professionals as it relates to Platinum Banking initiatives, changes, and products as a member of the national Banking Leadership team

  • Support each Market Leader in the development and implementation of the regional integrated business plan, including clearly defining revenue growth and profitability objectives for Platinum Banking

  • Achieve the Platinum Banking business plan in the pan-region with ability to directly influence business acceptance, pricing, professional capabilities, lending operations and business development including HNW Client Optimization

  • Monitor the overall business results of Platinum Banking within each region and provide analysis of key factors impacting current performance and potential issues for the future

  • Ensure integrity of integrated offer is maintained and a customer centered culture is supported and enhanced through the delivery of Platinum Banking products

  • Reinforce BHPB sales process and client experience, identifying gaps, issues and best practices through the monitoring of sales and performance targets against plans in order to create and sustain a sales environment that ensures consistent superior service to BHPB clients and prospects

  • Develop internal and external networks and referrals sources to ensure the ongoing growth of the BHPB business within the region

C. Technical Leadership & Development

  • Lead the implementation of Platinum Banking strategy, product, policy, and operations to all Platinum Banking professionals within the pan region

  • Execute defined implementation strategies for any Platinum Banking product or process changes, following established change management principles and ensuring communications to all Platinum Banking personnel within the pan region

  • Act as a technical resource in Platinum Banking for all Platinum Banking personnel, and as a consulting resource in these areas for other BMO Harris Private Bankingemployees

  • Ensure the effective and efficient lending operations across the end-to-end process, including the delivery of national operational standards; work with Senior Manager, Professional Services to ensure operating metrics and SLAs are maintained and operations management tools and principles are maintained across the pan-region

  • Partner with the Market Manager or Regional Directors or Senior Manager, Professional Services to identify and resolve any training or knowledge gaps for employees in the region to ensure a consistently superior level of Platinum Banking expertise

  • Investigate and resolve or make recommendations about more complex, non-routine issues relating to client inquiries or requests, or issues escalated by Platinum Banking employees as well as provide specialized expertise,technical advice and counselon complex Platinum Banking deals

  • Manage portfolio size and professional capacity in partnership with the Market Manager

  • Ensure the Region’s loan portfolio is in conformity with the Bank’s established credit policies and lending directives

  • Respect the Bank’s credit process and is accountable for proper structuring of credit transactions, for provision of accurate and complete data to the credit system, for ensuring appropriate investigation to minimize risk to the Bank, and for the quality of credit granting and loan documentation

  • Approve appropriate banking fees, rates, and security packages within the pan-region with objective to optimize profitability and share of wallet for BMO Harris Private Banking

D.Change & Innovation

Support the identification and sharing of enterprise and industry best practices, to maximize productivity and

  • encourage continuous improvement, collaborating with National Office and other Regional Directors, Banking as required

  • Support the improvement of Platinum Banking products and workflows by identifying and recommending process improvement initiatives to National Office

  • Recommend new products and services based on review / continuous monitoring of client needs and act as an effective feedback loop to the national Banking Leadership Team on product gaps and issues

  • Identify requirements to meet changing internal and external conditions and drive business innovation and new customer centered solutions in partnership and with the support of National Office

  • Develop and sustain key partner relationships across BMO Financial Group with specific accountability for relationships with Retail Investment Regional Sales Managers, Creditor Insurance Sales Support Managers, Credit Department, Industry Programs, Corporate Finance Division, Loan Portfolio Group in BMO Capital Markets, and US BMO Private Bank.

E. Risk Management & Compliance

  • First line of defense for Platinum Banking operational effectiveness; manage risk and minimize losses through audit, monitoring and controls reports and functions, ensuring compliance requirements, audits and verifications are completed in accordance with Bank Policies and Procedures and regulatory, legal and ethical requirements.

  • Approves and monitors operations management tasks including the building and implementing of action plans for management control framework

  • Exercise judgment and ensure adherence to Corporate Risk Policy for credit applications, ensuring that risks identified are mitigated and credit recommendations/ decisions are made in accordance with sound credit-granting principles and in compliance with the Bank’s philosophy and principles as well as appropriate supporting Policies and Procedures

  • Recommend credit qualification and/or discretionary limit requests of Platinum Banking personnel , as well as establish or review credit qualification status and/or discretionary limits when necessary

  • Provide guidance and advice on compliance policies and procedures related to banking and lending services issues, and ensure risk management procedures and controls are being adhered to

  • Ensure the quality of the overall Platinum Banking portfolio in the pan region to support effective portfolio quality management

  • Ensure adherence to all aspects of First Principles our code of Business Conduct and Ethics including individual accountability as it relates to potential conflicts of interest, safeguarding of customer information, trading in securities, anti-money laundering, privacy and disclosure of outside business activities

  • Follow security and safeguarding procedures and apply appropriate due diligence in accordance with Bank policy for the prevention of loss due to fraud, robbery, counterfeiting, money laundering or defalcation

  • Protect the Bank’s assets by adhering to all everyday banking, business banking , investment and lending regulations (as appropriate), Policies and Procedures, legal and ethical requirements, process requirements, bank guidelines and lending process requirements and established risk guidelines; as well, as instructions and guidelines required by National Office


Knowledge and Skills


Bilingual (French/English)

MBA, CA, CMA, CGA, CFA or other post graduate degree or equivalent job related experience


Minimum of 10 years experience in banking leadership roles

Expert knowledge of private banking, including commercial credit, banking operations and mutual fund and term investment sales

In-depth knowledge of Trust and Investment Management disciplines

Risk Management (In-depth knowledge)

Proven track record in developing and growing a profitable financial or related client service business

Recognized as an expert in banking in the Private Bank and in the industry

Extensive knowledge and technical proficiency related to Platinum Banking strategies, issues and trends

Significant technical expertise in the areas of financial planning, banking products and services

Broad perspective of economics and financial markets

Broad and diverse background of the financial service industry and expert knowledge of the banking, and personal and commercial credit disciplines for the high net worth market.
