This position is the Medical Instrument Technician in the Radiology Department at the Rapid City Indian Health Service, Rapid City, South Dakota. The incumbent reports to the Supervisor of the Radiology Department. Major Duties:

  • Responsible for the accuracy, precision, quality and performance of screening, diagnostic and invasive sonography.
  • Responsible for follow-up of abnormal sonograms and tracking of abnormal results.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with appropriate agencies, individuals and other public of private groups concerned with breast cancer prevention and control.
  • Maintains appropriate databases for the planning, development and evaluation of a comprehensive sonography system. Orders and maintains supplies

Experience and education requirements. The following shows the amounts of education and/or experience required to qualify for positions covered by this standard. GS-05:1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-04 grade level OR 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-05 level you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-4 grade level that included duties such as: Using basic instruments and diagnostic or treatment procedures; position patients for examination or treatment; and use basic medical terminology commonly used in the specialization. GS-06:1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-05 grade level To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-06 level you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level that included duties such as: Perform routine diagnostic or treatment procedures; position patients for examination or treatment; and use advanced medical terminology commonly used in the specialization. GS-07:1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-06 grade level To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-07 level you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level that included duties such as: Perform specific diagnostic or treatment procedures; recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable alternatives to position patients for examination or treatment; and use advanced medical terminology commonly used in the specialization. GS-08:1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-07 grade level. To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-08 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level that included duties such as: Operate and/or instructing in the operation of equipment; performing routine and standard diagnostic or treatment procedures, patient instructions, and instrument cleaning and maintenance; adapt the instrument to the patient and/or select procedures based on patients' physical condition; and respond to emergencies and make recommendations to physicians based on observation of patients' responses. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Selective Placement Factor:Must submit a Professional Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) OR by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) in Ultrasound.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-08 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
