Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The Community Health Nurse positions are located at Four Corners Regional Health Center, Red Mesa, Arizona; Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle Health Center, Bloomfield, New Mexico and Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, New Mexico. The Community Health Nurse plans, coordinates and evaluates a comprehensive community health nursing program and assists the community in planning and evaluating a local health care delivery system. This position reports to the Supervisory Community Health Nurse.

  • Conduct epidemiological and community surveys, field investigations and research studies to appraise health needs.
  • Assess and diagnose needs and set up a plan of action; participate with the interdisciplinary team; work with Tribal, State and County agencies in planning health related activities.
  • Plan and provide a comprehensive nursing service to individuals, families and communities; provide skilled nursing services to individuals and families in homes, schools and/or outreach clinics.
  • Provide patient teaching and assist them in understanding, accepting and adjusting to the implications and responsibilities of medical care, diagnosis and treatment.

  • Travel is required to make home visits.

  • Relocation expenses are authorized and will be paid. You will be required to to sign a one-year service agreement. Failure to fullfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.

*BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: *A minimum of a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed.

Registration: Applicants must have an active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Minimum Qualifications:In addition to the above you must meet the following minimum qualifications for the grade level you wish to be considered for:

GS-07: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.

GS-09: Two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education OR a master's degree or equivalent degree OR one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level.

GS-11: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level.

Graduate Education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience: Experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and ability to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position. For example, experience as a community health nurse who provides primary health care and generalized public health nursing services in a clinic, home, hospital, school and/or assists the community in planning and evaluating a local health care delivery system.

The selected individual is required to maintain nursing licensure requirements. If nursing licensure is maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Federal employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.

A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.
