Job Description:

The Senior Systems Administrator will be responsible for providing the primary management, administration, support, and ongoing maintenance of Cloud Managed Services Customer applications and Operating systems within a 24x7x365 environment. This role must be able to understand, execute, and document moderate to complex operational tasks and work requests that are assigned and have experience in moderate to complex research and fact finding using various tools and informational sources.

The role will be expected to work in a positive and collaborative fashion with fellow team members, senior engineering/architect staff, vendors, and customers. The Sr. Systems Administrator will assist with process maturation, development, technical standards creation, and drive operational excellence through consistent delivery and best practices. This role will also include the core fundamentals of day-to-day operations, based off the ITIL v3 methodology.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in 24x7x365 shift coverage

  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all Virtustream Internal resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups

  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request

  • Provide support per request from various constituencies

  • Investigate and troubleshoot issues

  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures

  • Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies

  • Practical hands-on experience implementing, administrating and troubleshooting common TCP / IP based services, including NTP, DNS, SSL, SSH, services, etc

  • Perform preventative maintenance (and upgrade, as required) on Linux Operating Systems and related peripherals to meet IT specifications

  • Provides technical expertise in cross-functional and intra-departmental efforts.

  • Identify system performance issues and drive the development of tools to correct

  • Ensure that the technical environment is properly monitored and that any problems are rectified

  • Performs diagnostic testing on network systems and infrastructure problems

  • Coordinate all hardware and software problems or repairs channeled through outside vendors and service providers

  • Performs configuration, testing, and change control documentation of enterprise systems and network infrastructure platforms

  • Perform systems/software administration, backup/recovery monitoring, problem resolution, and change management

  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary

  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures

  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning

  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required

  • Required 7+ years experience as a systems administrator or server engineer in a large single site or multiple site Enterprise IT or managed services organization

Critical Hiring Criteria:


  • 5+ years working directly with the implementation and administration of Microsoft Windows 2008/2012 server systems (as well as legacy Microsoft server), both virtual and physical

  • 2+ years experience with VMware ESXi, ESX, vCenter 4.x, or vCenter 5.x is strongly desired - planning, deployment, configuration and administration of host systems and virtual machines

  • 2+ years of any UNIX or Linux experience is strongly desired

  • 2+ years experience working with enterprise server platforms (Cisco, HP, SUN, Dell, IBM)

  • 2+ years experience working with enterprise storage platforms (EMC)

  • 4+ years or more of IT Service Management, data center, server, virtualization, systems management, and/or project management are recommended

  • Strong technical experience with industry standard x86_X64 server hardware


  • MCSE certification or equivalent experience

  • ITIL v3 Foundation preferred

  • Linux and Unix a plus

  • Experience with Server Virtualization is a plus

  • Experience with Cisco UCS a plus


  • Bachelor degree in Information Management, Computer Science, or other related field is preferred for this position
