Under the direction of the Chief, Canteen Service, the incumbent is expected to work independently with minimum guidance. The incumbent performs a variety of food service duties in support of the VCS food operations.

Duties include but aren't limited to:

  • Assisting with the preparation, presentation, and serving of food items.
  • Assuring all food items, paper goods, forks, knives, etc. are stocked/maintained in preparation for the daily operation of assigned shops/areas.
  • Assisting with unloading food from delivery trucks, receiving & storing of food deliveries.
  • Complying with safety rules and health provisions addressing sanitation & food handling.
  • Cleaning tables, removing trash, cleaning machines, dishes, dishwashers, dispensers, refrigerators, walk-in freezers, displays cases, mixers, etc.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 12pm - 4pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( ).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is the ability to read and interpret instructions and perform simple calculations used in food preparation.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  1. Knowledge of general food sanitation principles
  2. Knowledge of proper food handling and food sanitation procedures.
  3. Ability to read and interpret instructions
  4. Ability to perform basic arithmetic used in food preparation

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS:Work requires constant standing & walking, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and pushing and pulling. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 45 pounds unassisted, & occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 45 pounds with assistance of lifting devices

WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation.
