Works all positions on tray line including setting up, replenishing and breaking down assigned station. Delivers and/or retrieves meal trays to/from patient's bedside. Transports food trays and/or nourishment on food carts using an electric truck following an established schedule. Apportions food for tray line or nourishment using designated portions and containers. Prepares sack lunches and individual nourishments based on rotations and individual diet orders. Works in Patient Cafeteria. Performs cleaning tasks in work areas. Assists with on-the-job training for lower grade employees. Properly cares for electric truck. Works on dish machine and in scullery. Addresses patient comments or complaints in a courteous manner. Serves as relief in Diet Communications Office.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Food Service Worker without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  1. Knowledge of basic food safety procedures.

  2. Ability to operate and care for equipment.

  3. Knowledge of procedures relating to food preparation.

  4. Ability to interpret instructions.

*PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: *When in the kitchen, performs heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils, pushing heavy carts, and unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. Subject to continuous standing and walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Required to work on ladders and use power cleaning equipment. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 40 pounds or more with assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Pushes heavy carts weighing up to 500 pounds. When in the diet office, performs work in office setting using computer terminals and printers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is either in an office setting or in the kitchen areas. In the kitchen area, steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often causes uncomfortably high temperatures and high humidity. Noise can also be a factor from food service activities. When in the kitchen, is exposed to extreme temperatures from entering walk-in refrigerators and freezers. They are subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, or water.
