The position is located in Imaging Service at the Veterans Administration South Texas Health Care System, San Antonio, Texas. Incumbent is the designated radiology technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all diagnostic radiology examinations and fluoroscopic x-ray procedures. This may include the Kerrville Division, North Central Federal Clinic, and Frank Tejeda Outpatient Clinic, as needed. Candidate will be expected to work various tours of duty (days, weekends, evenings, nights) with possible on-call tours and will be subject to a rotating holiday schedule. These exams are performed with and without the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to assist with diagnostic studies and therapeutic interventional pain management procedures. While achieving diagnostic studies so the proper diagnosis and treatment may be accomplished.

  • Performs standard radiographic examination of the head, trunk and extremities for diagnoses of illness and injuries. Receives patients and explains examinations to be performed, ensuring patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning patient for requested examination.
  • Assist radiologist in complex fluoroscopic examinations which require incumbent to prepare and administer intravenous, oral, and/or rectal contrast media.
  • Trains employees and student technologist, coordinates radiation safety, receives patients and explains procedures, prepares x-ray room and equipment, performs portable and pediatric radiography on wards, in clinic, operating room, emergency room (Triage), and recovery room.
  • Maintains records of patients examined, and studies performed in the hospital information systems.
  • Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate these more urgent priorities.
  • Explains exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, is possible.
  • Identifies properly patient images using left and right markers.
  • Performs operator maintenance on equipment, as required.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the developments in the field of allied health sciences as related to Radiologic technology and maintains current American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) registration.

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Education:Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient is spoken and written and written English.


* EXPERIENCE:* At least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  • Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines;
  • Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed;
  • Knowledge of patient's clinical records, diagnosis, and laboratory results;
  • Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed;
  • Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with customer based, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers;
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

CREDITABLE EXPERIENCE: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Assignments:Employees at this grade level serve as staff Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists at the full performance level. Candidates at this grade level are to be qualified to provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic services.
