The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS)in San Antonio, TX. is looking for a Neurologistwith training or extensive experience in* Multiple Sclerosis.*The position is located at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, TX.

Due to the increasing number of Veterans with Multiple Sclerosis the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital is seeking a Neurologist with Multiple Sclerosis experience/training. This is a great opportunity to help build a Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence at our facility and help America's heroes, Veterans. The Neurology section has 6 Neurologist with subspecialties in the areas of Neuromuscular, Epilepsy, Movement Disorder, and Vascular Neurology.

The selected applicant may be offered an Academic Appointment with University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. You will be involved with teaching of Neurology residents and medical students. There are also research opportunities available. Clinical duties will include 20 hours per week for clinics. Appointments are scheduled for one hour for new patients and 30 minutes for follow up appointments. The selected physician can expect 70% of patients pertain to Multiple Sclerosis and 30% general Neurology. The other 20 hours each week will be spent on in-patient care, administrative duties, teaching and research.

Scope of Duties:

In addition to observances of Federal, National and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this Health Care System, this position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities overseen by their Section Chief.

Administrative Duties: Leadership, Human Resources, Staff management, Time/Leave management, and Clinical management.

Clinical Duties: Patient care, Medical/Clinical knowledge, Clinical judgment, Interpersonal and communication skills, Professionalism, and system based practice.

Education: Practitioners are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitor and coordinate educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision.

Research Duties (If applicable): Physician researchers will show an ability to identify and define significant research and developmental problems, to plan and execute a precise research program, and to generate effective reports and results worthy of publication.

Duty Hours:

8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday: Includes light on call schedule of 1 out of every 6 weeks.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Board Certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or currently in a program leading to Board Eligibility with an expectation of becoming Board Certified
  • Fellowship trained in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuro-immunology and/or extensive experience in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuro-immunology.
  • Current BLS certification
