This position is for a highly trained and skilled pharmacy technician in the VA Health Care System San Diego. The incumbent will perform a variety of complex technical skills and functions which requires comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. The employee will assist the pharmacist in providing optimal care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and goals of the VAMCSD and Pharmacy Services. Employees functioning at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians requiring little guidance and supervision from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures.
Read and interpret prescriptions, obtain proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determine proper amount and count, pour, or measure the medications, affix the proper label and record required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order.
Dispense medication in ambulatory care, pass or discharge situations.
Responsible for inventory and replenishing emergency carts without a second review.
Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdated drugs; monitors refrigerator temperature on weekly basis in-patient care areas.
Prepares products for mailing, ensuring items are wrapped, logged properly, and forms completed for items being sent certified mail or UPS.
Work Schedule: Tour of duty will be a rotating schedule
Weekend, Holiday and overtime work will be required

A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months of experience.
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
English Language Proficiency.

One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Physical Requirements: This position requires moderate lifting of 15-44 pounds, moderate carrying of 15-44 pounds, walking and standing for up to 8 hours, repeated bending up to 8 hours, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing aid permitted.
