This position is located at the VAMC San Francisco, CA. The Food Service Worker performs duties that require a wide knowledge of food service operations including food and nourishment preparation, tray assembly, etc.

Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Prepares serving area for tray service;

  • Distribute and collect trays form the bedside and records information

  • Performs a variety of tasks in the dish room;

  • Sets up and operates mechanical dishwasher and pot and pan washer;

  • Cleans the tables and chairs;

  • Sort, washers peels and cuts fresh fruits and vegetables;

  • Pushes tray delivery carts to distribute and collect trays;

  • Prepares uncooked items following simple instructions;

NOTE: Intermittentemployment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort they are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds) unassisted (e.g., pushing small carts of dirty dishes) and 40 pounds occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 9 kilograms (20 pounds) 27.000kg ( 60punds) (e.g., filling beverage dispensers) with the assistance of other workers. Performing heavy work such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies. May be required to work on ladders and use power-cleaning equipment.

This work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages havebeen dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
