The San Francisco VA Medical Center is looking to recruit many Part Time Food Service Workers to work in the Veterans Canteen Service.


The incumbent of this position performs a variety of food service duties in the Veterans Canteen Service which may include one or more of the following: Kitchen, serving lines, food preparation. May be required to operate the following kitchen equipment: dishwasher, cash registers, electric can opener, vegetable chopper, conveyor toaster, steam table, fry saver, broaster, breader, mixer, and sandwich packager, etc.

Defrosts, fills, and maintains frozen yogurt machine. Fills ice machines and rotates and stocks assorted bottled/canned beverages, sandwiches, etc. for the refrigerated display cases. Assures all food supplies, paper goods, and utensils are stocked/maintained in preparation for daily operation. Unloads food from delivery trucks and stores or stocks items. Cleans tables and/or moves trash, and cleans machines, dishes, dishwashers, dispensers, refrigerators, walk-in freezers, display cases, mixer, etc. Greets customers. Sets-up food areas and tables, and carts food, beverages to catering locations.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am -Noon or Monday - Friday, 12:30pm - 4:30pm

Complete food service tasks following written processes; Read and understand written material such as time and duty schedules, menus, and recipes; Follow instructions on written materials such as data sheets for hazardous chemicals, and basic work instructions; Follow sanitation and infection control procedures; Remove soiled dishes from tables; Wash dishes, pots and pans manually; Scrapes, soaks, scour and scrubs heavier cooking utensils such as mixing bowls and pots; Stack and store dishes; Assemble pots and utensils and return to proper areas; Maintains clean work areas to include kitchen and dining room; Cleans and sanitizes floors, walls, dishes and other kitchen equipment; Empties, cleans and sanitizes garbage and trash containers; Transport food to serving area; Return unused items to proper storage areas; Stores and handles food to include proper covering and dating; Unloads supply trucks using proper lifting techniques; Brings supplies to work areas using proper moving equipment such as dollies, carts, etc.; Move carts safely and efficiently; Practice safe work habits; Use care in handling equipment; Routinely lift, carry, push or move heavy equipment and objects; Serve cold/hot food at service counter; Wipe up spilled food or liquid to prevent falls; Show courtesy and respect to customers in a restaurant/fast food environment; Show courtesy and respect to other staff and personnel; Serve people in a cafeteria line; Follow sanitation and infection control procedures; Recognize if food is spoiled or raw; Practice safe work habits; Follow safety and sanitary standards; Use care in handling equipment.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Three (3) months general work experience, preferably in a cafeteria and/or fast food environment that provided the basic principles and concepts used in all functional areas of a food service operation.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Work requires constant standing and walking, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and pushing and pulling. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 45 pounds and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 45 pounds with assistance of lifting devices or other coworkers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation's. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt, and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
