The Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who holds twenty-four hour accountability for the management of the Renal Dialysis Unit (RDU) within VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the management of nursing practice and nursing operations as well as the coordination and management of care on the RDU.

Duties include:

  • Manages the patient care environment including budgeting, supplies, equipment and patients
  • Personnel management including scheduling, counseling and evaluation of staff
  • Staff orientation, continuing education, personnel development
  • Direct patient care as needed
  • Data collection, analyzing, trending, reporting, including nurse sensitive indicators, risk management
  • Manages staffing process using VA Staffing Methodology and electronic staffing programs
  • Creates and advocates for a healthy work environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff with diverse backgrounds
  • Monitors nursing peer review process
  • Monitors compliance to TJC standards and other standards and policies
  • Responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statements, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies
  • Collaborates with the Interdisciplinary Team in planning, directing and implementing patient care
  • Engage and support evidence based practices
  • Promotes VHAPUG Nursing Services Professional Practice Model
  • Promotes the nursing service shared governance structure and the Journey to Excellence
  • Keep staff informed of organizational goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communication in a timely manner

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. *Grade Determinations: *The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year’s of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year’s of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year’s of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year’s of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Master degree in Nursing
  • AACN Nurse Executive Basic Certification (NE-BC) or Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML)
  • Previous nurse manager or assistant nurse manager experience
  • Previous experience with Renal Dialysis Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.   • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • 5 years successful nursing experience with demonstrated leadership experience

  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and experience dealing with complex interpersonal situations

Physical Requirements:This position involves considerable amount of standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 6 hours), stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires repositioning patients, assisting with transfers from wheelchairs/stretchers and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices are available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift clients. The work may involve pushing or lifting in excess of 45 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual (corrected to 20/30 or better with color discrimination) and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed or extended position. The nurse may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The nurse many be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent must possess sound and logical clinical judgment. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The position also requires ability to work on computers for extended periods of time.
