Heavy Equipment Operator


  • Operates heavy equipment to repair Airfield and base street pavements, excavate utility lines, and haul material, etc. to perform necessary construction and maintenance of the installation.

  • Uses heavy equipment to perform snow removal.

  • Provides heavy equipment support for other DS2 shops and agencies on the installation.


  • Safely operates heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, dump trucks, cranes, scoop loaders, forklifts, etc. to perform base maintenance. Understands the limitations of each piece of equipment and the safe operating procedures for each.

  • Supports other shops by using heavy equipment to move materials, dig foundations/footing, trenches, ditches, hauls equipment, etc. to accomplish the mission.

  • Operates truck mounted sweepers to maintain debris free pavements on runways, taxiways and parking aprons in support of flying operations.

  • Uses approved snow/ice removal equipment to perform snow and ice control IAW approved plans.

  • Performs asphalt and concrete repairs by placing and finishing along with operating concrete saws, jack hammers, air compressors, pneumatic screeds, vibrators, crack sealer machine, etc.

  • Provides guidance to general maintenance workers on the use of concrete/asphalt tools and basic equipment operation.

  • Pavement work includes installing, repairing, patching concrete, asphalt, etc. Concrete work may include pouring sidewalks, footings, slabs, etc. Uses hand tools when to finish asphalt, concrete and landscaping projects.

  • May be called upon to assist with aircraft recovery activities.

  • Maintains and repairs base fences and gates.

  • Periodically performs stand-by duties for after hour emergency work. May be required to work non standard work hours in support of the mission.


  • Five (5) years experience operating various types of heavy equipment. Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is required.

  • Must be able to successfully pass the Hiro color vision test.

  • Must possess excellent communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to execute on multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must have the ability to deal with the customer and company employees in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.

  • Must read, write, speak, and understand English.


Physical Demands:

This classification’s activities range from, an office environment with extensive sitting demands to a field environment with extensive climbing, standing, stooping, bending, pushing, kneeling, stretching, and walking demands. May occasionally be required to lift objects whose weight exceeds 30 pounds. Special vision abilities to perform this job are close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.

Work Environment:

The diversity of work conditions may range from an office environment where there is little or no physical discomfort to a flight line environment where inclement weather may subject the individual to severe changes in temperature, wind, rain, etc. May be required to work in areas where high noise hazards prevail. May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and electrical shock hazards. May be required to work a flexible work schedule and alternating work days to meet mission and customer requirements.


  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement

  • Must complete the Flight Line Driver training within 60 days of hire.
