The purpose of this position is to provide direct professional social work services to individuals, groups, and families who utilize the inpatient and outpatient medical services. The position reports directly to the Supervisory Social Worker.

  • Provide direct professional social work services to individuals, groups, and families who utilize the inpatient and outpatient medical services.
  • Exercise professional use of variety of casework skills in developing comprehensive psychosocial assessments which examine the current situation as well as relevant bio-psychosocial and environmental factors of patients and their families.
  • Perform case management function including information and referral services and linkages to appropriate hospital resources and community based organizations.
  • Collaboratively formulate appropriate and realistic discharge plans working with other members of the health care team and available community based organizations.
  • Attend and participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds; participate in CQI and The Joint Commission activities including policy implementation and revisions.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: Social Work. Must fulfill all of the requirements for the master's degree in social work in a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Master's degree with practicum: Applicants who complete all of the requirements for a master's degree in social work that included a practicum are eligible for GS-9.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree OR 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Each PHS Social Worker must possess and maintain a current State license or certification.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, must have professional knowledge of the principles and practices of Social Work and a minimum of knowledge of medical terminology, diagnosis and their implications for daily functioning; ability to coordinate treatment plans with patient, family and other professionals in the hospital; knowledge of CQI and Joint Commission requirements.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
