This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Office of Surveillance and Biometrics (OSB), Division of Patient Safety Partnerships (DPSP) in Silver Spring, Maryland.

This position is an Interdisciplinary Engineer and may be filled in the following series:
0801 - General Engineer
0850- Electrical Engineer
0858 - Biomedical Engineer
If selected for this position, you will:
Serve as a technical authority to Agency and industry scientists regarding a variety of medical devices;
Evaluate and make recommendations to the Office of Compliance on necessary regulatory action required for medical device complaints and product problem reports;
- Make presentations to the medical and/or scientific panel members on the FDA Advisory Committee responsible for the classification and premarket review of medical devices; and
- Draft a variety of reports and summaries on the safety and effectiveness of devices submitted in a premarket approval applications.

In order to be qualified for an Interdisciplinary Engineer, GS-0801-0850-0858 position, you must meet the following:
A. Have successfully completed a four year course of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree in professional engineering from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.* - OR -*
B. Have successfully completed a four year course of study leading a Bachelor's degree in professional engineering that included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. * - OR -*
C. Possess a current registration as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. * - OR -*
D. Have passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination, and in addition, have a combination of education in the field of general engineering and professional engineering experience which totals at least four years. * - OR -*
E. Have completed at least 60 semester hours of course work in the physical, mathematical and engineering sciences. This course work included differential and integral calculus, as well as courses in at least five of the seven areas listed in response (B). Also, have professional general engineering experience which, when combined with my education as described above, totals at least four years. * - OR -*
F. Have a Bachelor's or higher degree in engineering technology, chemistry, physics, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, geology, or another scientific field directly related to engineering. In addition, have at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. - AND -
In addition, in order to be qualified at the GS-12 level, you must possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service which includes interpreting the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act as it relates to medical devices for other scientific staff in testing the accuracy of medical devices.
*In addition, in order to be qualified at the GS-13 level, you must possess *one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which includes recommending solutions to scientific complaints, research discrepancies, and/or medical device product problems.
You must submit an official transcript, unofficial transcript, or a list including courses, grades earned, completion dates, and quarter and semester hours earned.
