Provide surveying/field engineering support of all USAP surveying/field engineering activities in support of construction, maintenance projects, science projects and all airfields in Antarctica. Deploys to Antarctica during the Austral summer.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Provide surveying/field engineering support for the final design, orientation, layout, flagging, final site drawings for the Annual Sea Ice Runway, Williams Field Skiway and Pegasus Runway.

  • Provide surveying/field engineering support for sea ice safety of airfield operations on Annual Sea Ice Runway.

  • Performs weekly sea ice monitoring, sea ice analysis, sea ice deflection procedures (aircrafts/structures) for the Annual Sea Ice Runway site, sea ice access roads and transitions between the Annual Sea Ice/Ross Ice Shelf/Ross Island.

  • Provide surveying/field engineering support for monitoring of Annual Sea Ice Shipping Channel route.

  • Provide surveying/field engineering support for Air Traffic Control Contractor on obtaining information for Ground Control Approach Surveys (GCA) and FAA Certification data for all USAP airfields.

  • Providing surveying/field engineering support for construction staking/earthwork projects, topographic projects (final as-builts) for McMurdo Station, Annual Sea Ice and Ross Ice Shelf.

  • Provide surveying/field engineering support for science construction/support for science groups, science related field camps and skiway/runway support for field camps.

  • Provide surveying/field engineering support for Fleet Operations, South Pole Traverse Operations, South Pole Station, and Project Engineers- providing data for surveying/field engineering activities.

  • Keep the Survey Supervisor informed of the status of surveying/field engineering activities.

  • Interacts with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school diploma required. AA degree in surveying or Surveying Technical School Certificate preferred

  • Preferred Land Survey Intern / SIT (NCESS Standards) or equivalent

  • Electronic and manual survey data collection methods (Precision Survey Solutions/TDS/Trimble TSC1).

  • Carlson Survey Software, MS Word / Excel.

  • Trimble R8/4800 GPS survey systems / Trimble Business Center (TBC) software.

  • Three years of documented experience (Party Chief) in land surveying / field engineering experience related to the construction of facilities and systems. Proficiency in the use of “total station data collection”, Carlson Survey Software and Trimble GPS equipment (RTK and Static) is required.

  • Must be able to complete a project from “Field to Finish”.

  • Knowledge of sea ice dynamics / properties and experience with USAP airfield requirements helpful.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
