Scottrade Senior Accountant - St. Louis, MO in St. Louis, Missouri


The main purpose of this position is to close the books of the company, make journal entries, and complete account reconciliations for the company on a monthly basis in an accurate and timely manner. This position will also be responsible for improving department processes and handling projects of higher complexity.


  • Perform month end journal entries and account reconciliations in accordance with GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles).

  • Perform analysis of ending balances of balance sheet accounts to ensure that all accounts are properly stated with adequate supporting documentation.

  • Analyze records of financial transactions to determine accuracy and completeness of journal entries.

  • Maintain appropriate controls within the accounting function and recommend changes where appropriate.

  • Clearly communicate issues to management.

  • Improve the processes and procedures of closing the books in the Accounting department.

  • Understand all activities in balance sheet accounts assigned.

  • Maintain appropriate records, files, and documentation.

  • Respond to internal and external audit requests.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Process improvement oriented with the ability to search for ideas to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the month-end close and reconciliation process.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. Aptitude to manipulate large amounts of data.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and express ideas concisely, and effectively. Ability to listen to and respond appropriately to others.

  • Works effectively within the department and across departments as a pro-active team member.

  • Self starter willing to pro-actively assist others when necessary in completing activities.

  • Excellent reconciliation and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced/changing environment.

  • Ability to analyze and adjust processes and procedures for highest accuracy and efficiency.

  • Knowledge of GAAP.

  • Advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

  • Experience with Peoplesoft General Ledger preferred.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.

  • The physical requirements of this position are considered to be sedentary work (Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.).

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less in order to view a computer screen).

  • The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate (business office with co-workers, copiers, shredders, printers, etc).


  • Contacts with other persons within the department on routine matters as well as regular contact with other departments, or outside the organization furnishing or obtaining factual data requiring ordinary courtesy and tact. May need to regularly utilize specialized communication skills in order to maintain goodwill with internal and external contacts.


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • 5+ years accounting experience or 3+ years public accounting experience required.

  • CPA preferred.
