This position is located in the Rehabilitation Care Service Line of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Tacoma, WA.

The incumbent provides general and complex treatments that promote the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction. The Physical Therapy Assistant administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by a Physical Therapist, but must be able to carry out a complex treatment plan without the direct involvement of a Physical Therapist. The incumbent will primarliy be working in the Community Living Center, but will work in the outpatient clinic as needed. Duties include:

  • Under the general direction of a Physical Therapist, completes preliminary review/examination of patient data, compiles and organizes pertinent information, and develops/presents a patient profile to be used in assessing patient's status and ascertaining patient's need for therapy services.
  • Assists the Physical Therapist in the development of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes long and short term goals.
  • Observes patient ability to perform specified tasks in order to provide preliminary assessment of information on the patient's physical and functional status.
  • Administers standardized tests (manual muscle test, goniometry, Functional Independence Measure, girth measurement, vital signs, etc..)
  • Makes recommendations regarding patient's need for services.
  • Positions or repositions patients using proper transfer devices (transfer belt, sliding board) and procures assistance when necessary.
  • Adjusts and issues assistive devices for ambulation and instructs patients in their use.
  • Instructs, motivates and assists patients to use and care for orthoses, prostheses and supportive devices.

Tour of Duty:Monday through Friday, American Lake Division. May consider a compressed 4-10 schedule

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

Education: Successful completion of an associate’s degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).



Experience: In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  1. Ability to organize data, format that data into a presentation, and present information pertinent to patient care in formal or informal settings. Examples may include providing in-service training to staff or formal presentations to the treatment team.
  2. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. This may be demonstrated through continuing education courses, in-service training, or journal article reviews.
  3. Ability to independently implement selected components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
