This register is being established and may be used to fill:
(A) Full time permanent positions; OR
(B) Full time term positions exceeding 1 year but will not exceed 4 years from the date of the initial term appointment; OR

The primary purpose of this position is to set up and operate a variety of air blast shot peening machines manual and automatic to increase the resistance of metal parts to possible fatigue cracks. Interpret blueprints and technical orders in performing the following typical tasks. Examine parts received to determine areas to be peened, rejecting those with imperfections that do not conform to specifications. Operate particle blasting, vapor blasting, and nozzle blasting machines. Prepare chambers, portable units, booths, or open areas, and set operating controls. Perform preventive maintenance by lubricating equipment, chaning filters, and screens. Control tools and accomplish maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with shot peening operations. Document work performed through the use of Core Automated Maintenance System (CAMS) and other systems as appropriate. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations, and maintain a safe and clean work environment.

Ability to do the work of Shot Peening Machine Operator without more than normal supervision. (THIS IS A SCREENOUT ELEMENT. SCREENOUT ELEMENTS ARE THE CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR SATISFACTORY JOB PERFORMANCE. APPLICANT MUST RECEIVE A MINIMUM OF TWO POINTS ON THE SCREENOUT ELEMENT TO BE DEEMED ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.)
Ability to interpret blueprints and technical orders in performing shot peening tasks.
Ability to use and maintain shot peening/sandblasting tools and equipment.
Knowledge of technical practices regarding cleaning/peening characteristics.
Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours worked per week.

Appointment is contingent upon passing a physical examination.
Incumbent will be subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing. (This is a drug testing designated position)
Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain appropriate background investigation or security clearance.
May be required to possess a valid operator's license to drive and operate a motor vehicle to and from work sites.
May be required to become certified on systems and operations contained within assignment.
May be required to work overtime, on rotating shifts, uncommon tours, weekends, etc.
Requires prolonged standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling, and crouching in strained and awkward positions for prolonged periods to blast interior and exterior surfaces at various heights up to 100 feet. Uses hands, legs, and arms to climb vertical ladders to stagings or suspended platforms. Lifts, carries, and sets up equipment and components that weigh up to 75 pounds and, occasionally, objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. May be required to control blasting hose with nozzles subject to extremely high pressures (e.g., in excess of 100 psi).
Work is normally performed inside and outside in open and enclosed work locations under varied temperature, illumination, ventilation, and weather conditions. May be subjected to the possibility of cuts, burns, strains, and broken bones. Will be exposed to noise, dust, and flying abrasives, rust, scale, paint chips, slag, or loose objects, and all kinds of weather at work locations. Is required to wear heavy protected gloves, clothing, ear protection, air-fed hoods, or helmets, respirators, and safety shoes.
