Robert Half Finance & Accounting Director, Enterprise Portfolio Management Office in Toronto, Ontario

Our client, a Financial Services firm in the downtown core is seeking a Director, Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO) to provide leadership, set the direction, and coordinate the activities of the EPMO. This role represents an opportunity to build a new enterprise portfolio management office, almost from "the ground up". The Director will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and managing best practices for program/project management across the organization, with a strong emphasis on reporting and enhancing overall EPMO maturity. The Director, EPMO will also create practical methodologies for defining and measuring project and portfolio performance. This is a fantastic opportunity to shine in a ground breaking role. The Director, EPMO will be required to:

  • Create a roadmap for the build-out of the EPMO, with short-, medium- and long-term objectives, including a recommended EPMO team structure

  • Establish and refine common processes, templates, and/or applications as a set of standards and guide project managers, business and delivery leads through the processes

  • Develop and maintain both enterprise and line-of-business views of the project portfolio

  • Create a bench of project managers (full-time and contract) of required seniority, experience, business acumen and technical acumen as required to meet planned/forecasted initiatives

  • Provide leadership and direction to Project Managers ensuring projects are planned and delivered in accordance with EPMO standards

  • Implement tools and methodologies that enable the efficient management of projects

  • Develop and deliver a centralized approach to project value articulation, resource planning and risk management.

  • In collaboration with Finance and IT, coordinate FY CapEx/OpEx project financial planning and reporting

  • Measure project and portfolio performance, and deliver reporting that is accurate, accessible and up-to-date to enable effective decision-making

  • Actively support the Executive Management Team and the Initiative Governance Committee in evaluating and approving new projects/business cases, and managing resource demands and risks across the portfolio (both people and dollars), re-prioritizing where required

  • Create a center of expertise and a source of respected advice and support with respect to project management

  • Drive coordination and alignment across projects, to foster efficiencies across the organization

  • Implement complex change management projects involving cross-functional teams and technologies

  • Foster collaboration, communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement across the EPMO, and in its dealings with all stakeholders

Requirements: In order to be considered for the Director, EPMO role, you must have:

  • A University degree and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • 10 + years of direct work experience in a project management capacity, including all aspects of process development and execution

  • Direct and proven experience with building an enterprise project management office

  • Expertise with various project management methodologies and tools

  • Experience with implementing project management tools and reporting systems

  • 5 + years financial management experience

  • 5 + years of people management experience

  • The ability to instill and drive change management disciplines across an organization

  • The ability to build and establish new processes and procedures, understanding the associated implications as well as training and communication requirements

  • Strong leadership skills and executive presence, with excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. It is critical that the Director EPMO can impact and influence skills, with the ability to create strong relationships and buy-in, drive change, and constructively manage resistance

  • Strong financial acumen, specifically related to business cases and projects

  • The ability to navigate shifting priorities, demands, and timelines, and effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
