The Health Aid position will be located at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System at Tucson, AZ. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform receptionist duties;
  • Answer the telephone;
  • Escort and/or give directions to patients/customer;
  • Assist with filing;
  • Transport patients by wheelchair to and from appointments;
  • Transport patients using oxygen;
  • Ensure assigned wheelchairs are returned to the designated area; Report unsafe conditions;
  • Report any observed emergencies to the appropriate personnel;
  • Take corrective action during simple potentially hazardous situations;
  • Observe patient conditions and report notable changes to the ward; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30AM - 4:00PM.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) months of general experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. To receive credit for these skills, they must be documented in your resume. OR

SUBSITUTION OF EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent. * OR*

COMBINATION: A combination of general experience and high school education that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position (Narrative Response Not Required):

  1. Ability to communicate orally and written.

  2. Ability to learn the physical layout of the medical center.

  3. Ability to follow established work procedures to work safely.


Employee is required to be on his/her feet continually during the work shift and must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, push, pull and lift. Work is manual labor requiring physical stamina, occasionally requiring moderate to heavy lifting, pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds.


Employee will work indoors in well lighted, air-conditioned space. Handles waste materials that are sometimes contaminated and that may contain sharps capable of causing injury. Using cleaning solutions that may cause skin irritation.
