Our examiners pride themselves in assisting and advising taxpayers or their representatives on correct tax reporting, law interpretation and in troubleshooting business-specific scenarios. Our state boasts a high degree of voluntary taxpayer compliance and we believe it's because our staff is committed to making clear tax reporting regulations and processes.
For the first 9-12 months of your work with us, you will go through an in-training program designed to help you gain understanding of Washington excise tax laws and learn your resources to research and interpret those laws. You'll perform limited account examinations and reconciliations, billing and refunds, and assist taxpayers with less complex tax related issues.
After successful completion of the in training program, you may advance to the journey level and join a team responsible for assisting businesses with Business and Occupation tax, Retail sales and use taxes, public utility taxes and various other taxes. At this level, you'll perform financial examinations of tax records, tax returns, audit reports or assessments, evaluate business activities and accounting records to determine taxpayer compliance with applicable laws.
There are over 500,000 businesses registered in the state of Washington that are subject to tax reporting requirements, and our Excise Tax Examiners are here to help them navigate those requirements and resolve discrepancies.
**Depending upon qualifications, you may be appointed into any of the job titles below and subsequently promoted through the training plan upon successful completion of the training steps.
To qualify for entry at the ETE 1 level (Pay range 37; $2602 - $3369/mo DOQ);**
A Bachelor's degree or higher involving major study in business or public administration or closely allied field with a minimum of 12 semester (or 18 quarter) hours of accounting (or closely related college level course work). Students within one course of meeting this qualification may also be eligible.
At the ETE 2 level (Pay range 46: $3,212 – $4,208/mo DOQ);
One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 1,
A Bachelor's degree or higher involving major study in business or public administration or closely related field with a minimum of 12 semester (or 18 quarter) hours of accounting or very closely related college-level courses
One year of accounting or auditing experience.
Two years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, compliance or tax administration, provided the required accounting course work (12 semester or 18 quarter hours of college level accounting or very closely related college-level courses) has been completed.
*At the ETE1 and ETE2 levels: Accounting, Auditing, Excise Tax Assistant or equivalent experience will substitute year for year for education providing required 12-semester or 18-quarter college level accounting course work has been completed or is within one course of completion. *
