The Assistant Manager of Training for Alpine Certification is responsible for the creation, administration, quality, and staffing of Alpine Certification training for all Vail Ski & Snowboard School instructors and trainers. He/she is also responsible for the overall quality of lessons delivered at Vail. This position works with the Manager of Training and Location Training Managers to facilitate and assure the quality of centralized alpine training - specifically focused on certification training, new-hire training, and safety training. This role leads and models delivery of training on-snow and indoors.

Responsibilities Include (but not limited to)

  • Reports to and works directly with the Manager of Training and Quality. Works with Location Training Managers/Supervisors, Assistant Manager of Training: Snowboard, and the Hiring & Training Coordinator. Attends training team meetings.

  • Directly responsible for alpine certification and specialization training program design, implementation, and analysis. Involved in new-hire training, safety training, and overall training program planning.

  • Work with other Training managers/supervisors and Manager of Training & Quality to ensure quality and consistency throughout the School.

  • Work with Manager of Training & Quality and Assistant Manager of Training: Snowboard on VSSS and enterprise-wide initiatives.

  • Work with Vail training staff to organize certification training curriculum, schedule trainers, and promote training opportunities to instructors.

  • Monitor quality and performance of instructor staff at exams and adjust certification training to improve instructor performance. Coach and counsel individual instructors when appropriate.

  • Work with operational supervisors and product managers to help align certification training with instructor quality and POD performance.

  • Design, schedule, and lead Alpine Cert Kickoff.

  • Designs and facilitates Alpine Cert Trainer’s Training in conjunction with Alpine Trainer’s Training. Responsible for the professional development needs of the Alpine Cert Training staff.

  • Work with Product Managers and Supervisors to ensure the quality of products/services, deliver exceptional guest experiences, and develop training specific to business needs.

  • Develop, coordinate, and administer staff training at the POD and School levels. Develop and schedule on-going training for the location.

  • Role model excellence in clinic leading, training development, teaching, communication, and contemporary skiing/riding. Remain current with professional organizations (PSIA-AASI) and professional/personal development.

  • Lead trainings and continuously evaluate the effectiveness of the training program, both at POD and School levels.

  • Meet and greet guests daily, and model exceptional guest service. Resolve guest complaints efficiently and effectively and support 100% guest recovery.

  • Remain current with industry trends, competitions, and events and teach lessons to the public when necessary. 

  • Edits, manages, and contributes to the VSSS website.

  • Works with Mountain Operations and the Training Managers/Supervisors to help design and maintain beginner park and appropriate progression to meet the needs of our guests and have high functionality for services offered by the VSSS. Works closely with trainers from all disciplines to design and coordinate freestyle training and manage Alpine Park Pass Program and Freestyle Specialist Training.

  • Stays current in and interfaces with PSIA to insure our trainings are current, relevant, and useful for helping our instructors achieve higher levels of PSIA certification.

  • Maintain statistics relevant to certification and training participation. Analyzes performance gaps and assists with creating action plans to correct those gaps.

  • Coach and mentor instructors working towards certification.

  • Perform supervisor assistance duties on a regular basis. Teach the public as necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Actively demonstrates the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with a variety of demographics – required.

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform in a high paced, variable, multi-faceted environment with the ability to multi-task – required.

  • Current Level 3 PSIA Certified - required.

  • Rocky Mountain Trainer or equivalent divisional advanced educator - required.

  • Ability to ski a variety of terrain and conditions to move around the mountain and demonstrate appropriate skills/ movements to instructors and guests - required .

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Windows based applications, and internet based software – required.

  • Current PSIA-RM E2 or above Examiner – preferred.

  • College degree and/or two years relevant leadership experience in related field, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired - preferred.

  • Ski and snowboard school management experience - preferred.

  • Experience with video editing and social media - preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to withstand lengthy exposure to cold and inclement weather.

  • Physical strength and ability to respond appropriately to emergency and other unplanned situations.
