Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, as Scientist II, are to: • Isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive compounds from microorganisms; • Execute 80% of their work at the bench level; • Enhance the throughput of the Natural Products Group by identifying and implementing novel separation strategies and mass spectrometry techniques for rapid detection (dereplication) of natural products; •Perform method development in the isolation of small molecules; • Skilled in the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of flash, HPLC, MS and evaporation instrumentation; • Contribute to the optimization of active candidates and their advancement in development phase; • Work in interdisciplinary project teams; • Provide verbal and written updates at internal meetings and scientific conferences; • Direct the day-day work of a small laboratory based team of 1-3 direct reports. Provide leadership in the lab and promote team development; • Ensure execution of work assignments by laboratory staff to meet assigned deadlines; • Oversee the proper functioning of the lab including safety and housekeeping; • Ensure the compliance with all existing safety and other standards in the area of responsibility taking into account laws, regulations and directives and evaluate potential risks of the research activities.

More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: • Ph.D. or Master’s in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or a related chemistry discipline; • PhD with at least 3 years of relevant work experience in Natural Products Chemistry, with an emphasis in the isolation and structure elucidation of biologically-active compounds OR MS with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience; • Proficiency in the de-replication of Natural Products using MS and NMR-based databases; • Experience applying various techniques (reverse phase, normal phase, ion-exchange) to the isolation of natural products; • Comprehensive knowledge of separation techniques for isolating natural products; • Experience with LCMS; • Familiarity with various HPLC vendors and software (Waters, Agilent, etc); • Experience operating analytical and preparative HPLC is a must; • Experience and skill in scale-up from analytical to prep is a must; • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented working environment; • Well organized, detail oriented, and adaptable to changes; • Ability to problem solve and generate new ideas; •Ability to effectively prioritize workload and dynamically manage changes in program direction and/or deliverables; • Able to search and find techniques in the literature, implement them in the lab and critically evaluate results; • Creative and flexible thinking; • Able to constructively coordinate and oversee the work of others; • Ability to give clear and precise directions to group and project members; • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present scientific results clearly and concisely; • Mentoring of junior staff; • Data recording, interpretation, and management; • Self-motivated; • Manages multiple duties and projects.

Preferred qualifications: • Knowledge of alternative techniques for the purification of water soluble compounds; • Familiarity with mass-guided purification methods and instruments; • Experience with creation of dereplication in-house databases.
