About the Position:U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground is located near the Arizona-California border, adjacent to the Colorado River, approximately 24 miles north of the city of Yuma (pop 87,000), Arizona. Situated in the southwest portion of the state, the proving ground is in the heart of the great Sonoran desert. U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground conducts tests on medium and long range artillery, aircraft target acquisition equipment and armament, armored and wheeled vehicles, a variety of munitions, and personnel and supply parachute systems and is the Army's center for desert natural environment testing as well as the management of cold weather and tropic testing. U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground at 1300 square miles proudly holds the distinction of being one of the largest military installations in the world. It is here that America's ground combat equipment proves it has the right stuff to win our nation's battles.

The U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Center (ATEC) is participating in an alternate personnel system known as the Acquisition Demonstration Project (AcqDemo). Upon reaching the target level of this position (GS-12), the incumbent will be converted from the General Schedule (GS) Pay Plan to the AcqDEMO pay band (NH-0830-03).

This position serves as an advanced Mechanical Engineering trainee within the Yuma Test Center project engineer career ladder. The incumbent may be responsible for either small, relatively routine projects or they may assist higher graded project engineers by accomplishing limited phases of larger projects regarding tactical wheeled or tracked vehicle systems. The incumbent may be promoted to the next higher level without further competition provided the immediate supervisor requests it, the incumbent meets all regulatory and qualification requirements. Professional knowledge of mechanical engineering principles together with a sound understanding of standard scientific and engineering principles, practices, and methods and performing test and evaluation work such as assisting in preparation of plans for evaluation and testing of test items and making preliminary evaluation of test results and examining and reducing data and preparing reports for technical review are required.

Experience required:

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience equal to the GS-09 grade level in the federal service which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: assisting in preparation of planning, executing, and reporting for test and evaluation of tactical combat vehicle systems and subsystems performance such as fire control, target acquisition, position and navigation, powertrain, radio communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work time is normally divided between office and field sites with approximately 50% in the field. Office work is sedentary; however, work performed at outdoor test sites requires regular and recurring physical activity such as standing for long periods of time, working around, on, and over various items of machinery; fitting into constricted areas requiring stooping, crawling, climbing, walking and stretching. The engineer regularly inspects equipment being tested.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Approximately 50% of the engineer's time is spent at outdoor sites, requiring special safety precautions, e.g. working in and around heavy equipment and moving vehicles. In addition there is regular and recurring exposure to potentially dangerous or hazardous situations such as test firing of untried weapons. The incumbent is frequently exposed to adverse weather conditions, extremes of temperature, dust, high noise levels and toxic fumes. The engineer is required at various times to wear protective clothing, safety helmets, safety shoes, goggles, ear protectors and respirators.
